because massive harddrive failure is always a possibility

I am pleasantly surprised at how smoothly the yearly backup of my film is going! All I remember last year was a panic sleepless struggle to get everything onto dvdr's before the sixteen hour drive to college in which all of my harddrives would have many opportunities to fail. It's actually even more surprising because I had to farm the task out to my tabletpc, as the backup software isn't compatible with my version of Windows. So the data is coming off of an external harddrive and going back out to an external dvdrw drive. Usually when I jerry-rig something it doesn't work for long. So far no errors or coasters!
