j got me blood child by octavia butler for
my bornday. i swallowed it up in less than a
week and the book followed me on the subway,
on my walks, in the park, between hours
of writing. octavia and i have the strangest
relationship as i have read only about 5-6 of her
works now. i swallow her complex love and
recall of his/herstory, her painful relationships
with straight men, her breath for description
and texture.

excerpted from the essay "positive obsession"
in blood child:

8.
when i was older, i decided that getting a rejection
slip was like being told your child was ugly.
you got mad and didn't believe a word of it.
besides look at all the really ugly literary
children out there in the world being published
and doing fine!

3)
am not sure what is up with the universe
and me. if grieving is my way of resting
or if sitting and reading a book quietly
for hours on end is really a normal task
to do through out the day. i am trying to
understand and learn humility and be whole
and compassionate of my own mistakes.
learn these lessons and accept them and
ascend them and try. in some ways i am
worse of than i was three years ago.

4)
bornday events were good to me. i will
post pictures when i get the chance.
the food was glorious and more glorious
because i did not cook a majority of it.
the abundance of chocolate was also luscious
oh so luscious. hosting people in my
home has always been a happiness of mine.
this summer there were good guests who got
to drop by, share table, hold space,
and add pieces of themselves into the new
home. my bornday celebration was a
good transition to fall.
