Wayfaring Stranger is a song without any definitive origins (its claimed by several groups), and it shares a lot of themes and styling with a number of religions and cultures. It seemed right that a universe as far-reaching and multi-cultural as the 'verse that Whedon created in Firefly and Serenity would have a traveling, homeless song for the wayfaring strangers of the series and film (and various others that populate this wonderful, gritty place).
The first half of the mix is music that you might here in a bar or in the fields or on a long and lonely trip. There's nothing polished about them, but there's a lot of spirit. The second half has a handful of instrumental pieces that fit along the lines of what we heard in the show-violins and beauty.
You Got to Die-A.A. Bondy
And you just well be ready
You got to die
I Fought In A War-Belle & Sebastian
I fought in a war and I left my friends behind me
To go looking for the enemy, and it wasn't very long
Before I would stand with another boy in front of me
And a corpse that just fell into me, with the bullets flying round
Hold On-Tom Waits
They hung a sign up in our town
"If you live it up, you won't
Live it down"
The Longer I Run-Peter Bradley Adams
Well this road I'm on's gonna turn to sand
And leave me lost in a far off land
So let me ride the wind til I don't look back
Forget the life that I almost had
Sleep Alone-Bat For Lashes
But the darkness is a stranger in our lonely, lonely, lone.
Jailbird-M. Ward
Jailbird jailbird singing through the wires
Cuz his cage is closed and he's stuck inside
Singing "Who's gonna hear my 'help me help me' now?"
Like a Mountain-Timber Timbre
Oh, the human race
Oh, the devil's space
Mightiest of Guns-A.A. Bondy
With every breath you drink in the night
You won't give up your blue without a fight
And looking at the sky there is no pain
See the stars all falling down like burning rain
They were fired by the mightiest of guns
Girl In the War-Josh Ritter
And I gotta girl in the war, Paul I know that they can hear me yell
If they can't find a way to help, they can go to Hell
Wayfaring Stranger-Emmylou Harris
I am a poor wayfaring stranger
While traveling through this world of woe
Yet there's no sickness, toil or danger
In that bright world to which I go
