Golly gee, Sarah Palin's coming to Philly to raise some money. That hockey mom, Joe Six-pack lady who we've all come to know and, well, love ( Read more... )

Hm. Do activists often suggest that protesters dress up like caricatures of male politicians? Perhaps I'm being over-sensitive, but I think that this is problematic.

I'm more inclined to think that's related to ActUp's troublemaking nature. They tend to use very obnoxious and in your face tactics.
Furthermore, if you watch Palin, she is a caricature. She's a cartoon, a joke without substance. She
s never said an intelligent or honest thing in her career. Just like Bush the goofy looknig motherfucker, who we only stopped burning in effigy when Palin showed up. Passing out Bush masks was pretty common at rallies, ect.

One of the things I find deeply troubling about American politics is that it moves like advertising, and distinctly not like politics. People focus less on her policies (perhaps because she really hasn't any) and more on her personality, the categories into which she fits. This is true of most figures in our political system. Just as in advertising, one sells insurance by aligning it with ideals such as security, being sensible, rather than simply selling insurance, soft drinks with independence and exuberance and youthful rebellion, at most protests Bush was less a person who made certain horrible decisions, and more a redneck, a guy who nearly choked on a pretzel. Yes, and this is without even getting into all of the gender issues Palin dredges up with her. In the past, I objected to people I think know better using gendered insults at Hillary Clinton, because there were more specific and better things to insult than her junk. With Palin, everything is all wonky because she was chosen to be the woman, or so it would seem.

I'm not sure I see your line of reasoning. This is focusing on her policies. Moreso than her party ever will.

Birth control, sure. But her hunting and lipstick are her policies?

All the time.

Though I think this sort of thing is more performance art than activism.

I hadn't realised that ACT UP had become a theatre troupe in its old age.

Yeah. It's why I like ACT UP's policies over all. If you're gonna stand around and yell, do it in a silly costume too.
