Jayne'd heard, through the boat's considerably twisty grapevine, that there was snow at Milliways ( Read more... )

Snow is fun, even for California girls. For one thing, Lilly never got to see it much in life, except for the occasional ski trips or travel abroad. Which sucks, cause there's so much fun you can have with snow. Snowmen, snow angels....

...snowballs.

Like the one hurtling itself at Jayne's hat.

Fwump!

"Gorram it!"

Jayne whirls around, and instantly receives another snowball in the face.

Lilly is grinning madly and a little evilly as she ducks behind a tree and scoops up another handful of snow.

Shouldn't wear orange in a blizzard if you don't want to be a target.

Jayne looks around frantically, but he can't hardly see, what with the blizzard and all.

Still, he scoops up some snow and waits for the next assault.

The next snowball comes from behind a tree that could be said to be giggling more than most trees normally do.

Still, it's Milliways, so giggling trees are not exactly impossible. Giggling trees that sprout pink-gloved hands are somewhat more unlikely.

Jayne ducks as the snowball whizzes by, and starts to circle around to the other side of the tree.

Have to be a dumbass not to know who's on the attack.

Lilly is many things. Stealthy snowball assassin is not one of them, and while Jayne may not be the brightest star in the black, he's also not that much of a dumbass.

One more snowball goes flying in his direction before Lilly darts toward a more protective-looking clump of trees.

And, damn that girl has a good arm, because it's headed straight for him, and--

"Shit!"

He draws his gun and shoots it out of the air.

Lilly freezes in her tracks at the sound of the gunshot before whirling around, trying to glare while also trying not to crack up. Jayne shot the snowball.

Of course he did.

"Damn. Someone sure knows how to kill the wholesome winter fun. And, apparently, snowballs. That must be why Mal keeps you around. I mean, you just never know when a horde of rampaging snowballs is going to attack the ship."

"Well." Jayne shuffles his feet.

"Well. It was fast!"

"Duh. That's the point."

Lilly sighs exaggeratedly.

"If I made a snow angel, you'd probably shoot it too, wouldn't you? For like, lying in wait or something."

He holsters his gun and swaggers over.

"Now, girlie, you know I know better than to shoot at any sort of angel in this place. Liable to get myself incinerated."

"Okay, true," Lilly concedes, dusting snow off her gloves.

She grins up at him.

"Good to know there are some situations where whipping out your gun isn't your first response."

"Ain't usually the wrong response, Corpsey. You know what kinds of trouble we get into."

"I know."

She does, too, which might explain the solemn look.

"Jaynie."

Or it could have been just a cover. You know. Whatever.

Jayne scowls and kicks a footload of snow at her.

He has big feet.
