Chad nodded, then shook his head, and nodded again. "I like boys," he finally said. "I like girls, too. I liked being with Taylor a lot. We didn't break up because I wasn't into it or anything like that. But yeah. I've been with one guy before. It was fun."
I love that this story looks at Chad the way I look at him: into both boys and girls -- therefore, not breaking off with Taylor just because he suddenly realized they had no chemistry; closeted but not without experience; curious, and a little crazy in the head. And that one line said all of this at once.
Cute story, yeah.

That being said, I will add that I think the ending is beautiful. It's so hopeful, but realistic, and that's a hard combination to successfully pull off. I think you did a marvelous job of it.
Thank you so much for writing this, and for sharing it with us!

I like this whole little conversation--because although we-the-audience can see that, as a fictional character, Ryan is coded gay as hard as they possibly could, real life doesn't come with a history of conventions like that, so in-universe people reaching the same conclusion really are doing so as a result of stereotypes. So it makes perfect sense that he'd be annoyed with people just assuming he's gay, regardless of whether it's true or not.

"Yeah, when we were doing that project two years ago, remember? That family tree thing. You wrote a lot about most people except your dad."
Okay, Ryan? When you've really only been speaking to each other for a few weeks, it's probably not wise to let on that you've been paying enough attention to remember his school project from two years ago. Assuming you don't want him to know, that is.
"Is it one you ask everyone?" Ryan demanded ( ... )

They're rather sweet. Sharpay was a hoot and Troy was just...Troy. ;)
Cute story!
