Part 7: Song 4

Ten entries about the ten best songs of all time.

Sambomaster - "Futari"

I suppose it's all right to take a break from obliquely referencing song lyrics while blabbering about personal experiences, just this once, because. . . well, because I don't understand a single lyric in this song. It's in Japanese, and all I know is that the title, "Futari," means "A Couple" or "Two People." (Not to be confused with "futanari," which means "dickgirl.")

But just the same, it's such a powerful song it belongs right here. I first heard it when my internet pal Somari linked it in his livejournal, asking, "Why does Sambomaster always make me feel like I can take over the world?"

Good question!

I'd say a big reason is because Yamaguchi is the best rock vocalist of all time, yes I bloody mean that. His voice drifts between a soothing, high-pitched tone and insane-but-still-beautiful punk-rock screaming so readily it's as if he trained himself by slicing up angels with a chainsaw. Someone I know once described him as a pissed-off Rivers Cuomo. The other reason is that they're energetic in a way that only crazed dictators ever are. Also, funk. So now you know.

Every good song has a good memory to go with it. (If not, something is seriously missing from it, and you need to rectify this immediately.) So. I was driving her home from Johnson City, after another adventure. Back then I was still in school at UT: my second year. I had just discovered Sambomaster, and knew she had to hear it. I drove ever-so slowly, to draw out as much of the album as possible. We talked over the music--we always talked over the music--until we got to Futari. I told her to listen, and we passed, silently, through my hometown, in the middle of the night, the streets empty and the lights on, for five minutes and one second, the last note striking just as I pulled up to my house, where she was parked. "Yeah, that's a good band. You should send me some of their stuff."

I never did.
