Isn't it ironic? Don'tcha think?

My clinical instructor told us last night, along with several MGH employees throughout the day, that the Bay nursing students are way more helpful and eager to learn than NMU's students, and that we have a better concept of patient care than most groups. I laughed mostly inside and partly outloud because I realized how glad I am that I transferred. I'm not saying that all students at NMU are bitches. I know that's not true because I went there for 2 years and met lots of people who were super cool (and still are, of course!). But I'm pretty sure I wanted to bitch-slap some of the Northern nursing students. They just look at you like you're beneath them, like you're not achieving the same damn degree that they are (ours is an associate, theirs is a bachelors, but all that does is make you ready for management...NURSING IS NURSING!). And quite frankly, the few that I ended up working with were "those" nurses. Anyone who has ever worked on the floor anywhere in healthcare probably knows what I'm talking about - The ones who were never a CNA or care-aide, and therefore think that they're way too qualified to wipe an ass or help someone walk down the hall. They are also the ones who will stand there and criticize you for not doing your job correctly even though they've never actually done your job so they wouldn't know. There are people in my clinical group who share the same attitude, but they aren't nearly as open and obvious about it. I've always wondered where the heck people like that came from, and now I'm realizing that the teachers are mostly to blame because they look at us the same way. Is it really professional to teach your students to look down on the rest of the world with your nose in the air? Isn't nursing/healthcare about being a good person, not a snobby one? People lead by example, and that is very obvious in these situations. But, I'm going to brush my shoulder off and be glad that I can honestly say I will never be like that. I am working my way from the bottom up, the way that it should be. Everything is way cooler when you have to earn your spot.
