"Happy New Year, Baby!"
New Year’s Eve2004/Day 2005
“Give me the remote control, Pieter!” his sister ordered as they sat on the sofa in the Hoogenband family home.
Pieter handed the black plastic control to her with an annoyed expression on his normally sunny face. He didn’t respond verbally just continued his internet search on his laptop.
“Hey, go back to that channel!” Pieter yelled as he glanced up at the set.
“What channel?” his sister flipped back to where she thought he was talking about.
Pieter reached for the remote in vain, “No, not that one.....just let me see it!”
“No!...you’ve changed the channel a hundred times plus you online!! His sister brought the family’s attention to his technical command center. “What are you looking for anyway?”
Pieter could have ignored her but his father peered over his newspaper at the dispute and Mrs. Hoogenband emerged from cleaning the kitchen after their holiday feast.
“Uh...mm...m...you know..” Pieter stalled for time to create a believable tale. “End of the year highlights.....you know of the Olympics!” He added a bit of sarcasm as if they should feel ignorant for not thinking of it also.
“Haven’t you seen your half naked body enough for one year?” his sister smirked and added a stab, “ Why didn’t you go with Minouche to her family’s house today anyway?”
“Be nice to you brother it’s a brand new year and this is no way to start it....you’re both acting like children.....besides we would love to see highlights of Pieter swimming.” Their mom interrupted the conversation and ran interference like they were still teenagers.
His sister rolled her eyes and Pieter in turn shot her a nasty look and continued opening web sites.
Robbie had been reading a magazine just taking the whole thing in. He lowered the water polo periodical and grinned.
He slowly got up from the arm chair and set between his siblings on the couch. He leaned into the computer and started typing.
Pieter was a bit stunned but never said a word because before he could lament the NYC Olympic 2012 New Year’s eve site popped up.... the screen was plastered with a brown haired grinning Ian Thorpe towering over the other honored athletes.
Robbie gave his brother a naughty grin and got up to leave.
Pieter was shocked! How did Robert know? Did he know? Of course he knew! Had he been that obvious about his feelings for Ian? Pieter’s mind raced, overflowing with questions, denials he could make, excuses he could use!
Pieter felt a wave of heat cover him. That unmistakable warmth then rushes over your body leaving you flushed and red. The last time he felt anything this intense was in level 6 at the front of Mrs. Schmit’s class. His zipper was down and the girls in the first row were giggling and pointing!
He looked up and opened his eyes half expecting those girls in plaid jumpers to be there. Instead, his family was engaged in their activities oblivious to his secret...except Robbie, who winked at him and smiled then when back to his sports literature.
Pieter sighed...Whatever Robbie knew he wasn’t going to talk about it or ask any questions. Thanks goodness...Pieter thought because he wasn’t sure he had any answers.
Just that he wanted to see his lover in NYC and the web site Robbie found for him was going to be the closest he was going to get to him.

The ceremonies, speeches and interviews were over. All Ian had to do was stand there on the elevated platform with everyone and wait forty five minutes for the ball to drop.
It was pretty cold but he didn’t seem to notice. Ian was too busy fussing with his phone.
The other medalists who had been invited where taking photos, talking and using their video recorders so a phone call wouldn’t be out of place, not that he would have minded.
His gloved hands dialed the number....buzzing. He tried again.....buzzing but not like a busy signal besides if it was busy he would have just got voice mail.
Ian redialed the number he knew by heart.....buzzing!
He gazed over the crowd and smiled. Ian spotted a sign with his name in the distance. Several fan girls waving at him. He gave them a big wave and trademark grin, wondering if he could trade them autographs for a cellphone that worked.
The operator tried the connection then asked Ian to hold.
Another man noticing his dilemma asked if he had remembered to charge it. Ian smiled and nodded. Why do people ask that? He thought as he waited fretting.
It was twenty minutes until midnight in New York City. It was the next day where he was calling but it didn’t matter...he had promised to phone before the ball dropped and “kiss” at midnight.
Another wave and the operator returned on the line, “Sir, you need a phone that is coded for your call....she went on explaining the technical reasons why Ian wouldn’t be able to call.
He hoped he had said thank you. He really didn’t remember.
Ian had made sure he could use his cell in the US. He even called his mum earlier.
Ten minutes....Ian’s heart sunk and his lower lips was forcing a pout against his will. He could feel the cold now and he shivered.
She smiled as he shook. As a swim fan from New York, she was quite comfortable in this weather. He had seen her several times the last two days following with one of the coordinators about.
Handing him her phone, her eyes twinkled. “You can call the Netherlands from this phone, Mr. Thorpe." She had a sweet mischievous grin.
Ian’s jaw dropped. He started to speak but he had no earthy idea where to start!
“It’s five minutes until the ball drops....just push here and put the number in.” She leaned forward showing him the phone.
Ian took it and dialed......busy......four minutes till midnight.
He forgot about the girl and what she knew, dialing again......ringing....three minutes to go.
“Hello! Ian?” Pieter jumped up from the desk chair in his childhood room.
“Yeah, baby! it’s me.” Ian took a deep breath.
Pieter smiled and swirled around the room before returning to set in front of his laptop. “ I didn’t think you were going to be able to call, love.”
Ian was so happy to hear Pieter’s voice. “ I almost couldn’t! I was just sick.”
Pieter searched the web cast sites looking for Ian as he chatted. “What happened, hon?”
“Oh, Piet, don’t worry, I’ll tell you later...we only have about a minute!” Ian looked up at the time clock near the ball in Time Square.
56 seconds.
“Ian! Wave! I think I see you on the net!” Pieter was giddy.
Ian threw up his hand. The group of young ladies with the large colorful sign went wild. He smiled brightly....he was waving at them too.
Pieter bounced up giggling. “ I see you baby! I see you waving at me! Oh...Ian...I’m blowing kisses back to you too.”
12 seconds.
“Pieter? you there, baby?” Ian thought he lost the connection. “Can you see the clock here?”
Pieter was already counting. “ 9, 8, 7..”
“6,5,4...” Ian joined him.
“3,2,1!!!!! Happy New Year!!” They both sang out!
Sweet, mushy kissing sounds carried back and forth across the ocean.
“I love you, Pieter! Happy New Year, Baby!” Ian hollered out not caring if anyone heard him.... thought it was highly unlikely in the barrage of celebratory noises.
Pieter gleefully replied with the radio in the back ground covering most of his voice. “ I love you too Ian baby! Happy New Year!”
The connection was starting to fail but Ian managed to tell Pieter that he would call him from the hotel phone that night.

The video feed ended a few minutes later. Pieter laid out on the bed with his hands behind his head, smiling, remembering and dreaming.
Robbie knocked and waited for Pieter to invite him in. Sitting up Pieter looked inquisitively at Robbie who sat on the other twin bed.
“ Lot of screaming up here...Dad wanted to know what match you were watching?” Robbie’s eyes darted to the television that wasn’t on and grinned knowingly.
Pieter bashfully tried to response, “ Uh...mm...I was....did anyone...”
Robbie came over and set next to Pieter and patted his back. “ Don’t worry Piety, no know heard a thing and your secret is safe with me.”
Pieter managed a weak grateful smile and hugged Robbie. “ Thank you, Brother....Happy New Year.”
Robbie responded to the embrace. “Piety, I hope it can truly be a happy new year for both of you .....together.” Robbie pulled back and smiled at Pieter who was smiling through glad tears.

Ian waved again and swung around searching the group for his cupid.
“Your finished? Mr. Thorpe because you can hang on to it.” she looked up to meet Ian’s delighted eyes.
Ian still wasn’t sure what he should say but he definitely knew a big thank you was in order. “Please call me Ian! Thank you so much for letting me use your phone.” He gave it back to her.
“What is your name....how can I find you tomorrow to pay you for this call...” Ian was so genuinely thankful.
“Oh, please don’t worry about...Mr....Ian!” She giggled “I’m Julie, my dad in Mr. Anderson, he said you’re flying home early tomorrow afternoon..you really won’t have time.”
Ian knew she must have worked with one of the directors. He reached for Julie’s hand and gave it a hardy handshake, pulling her into a hug.
“Please Julie, I must repay you! That’s an expense call!” Ian wanted to say what an important call it was too.
Julie had a huge grin on her face. “Ian, it was an honor ! Just have a Happy New Year and don’t wait too long....we’re all rooting for you two!”
Another athlete patted Ian’s shoulder and joyfully wished him a Happy New Year. When he turned she was gone.
Ian made a mental note to get her address so he could send her a proper thank you. He shared happy greetings with fellow Olympians and staff. It would be a happy new year he thought.
After the festivities, on the way back to the hotel, Ian was reminiscing suddenly he spoke aloud. “We’re all rooting for you two?!”
