My friend
thoroughbass has an interesting idea: to form a group, either online chat club, or an LJ community, or something-or-other. If you live in the Boston area, he might be arranging an "IRL" meetup, with tea and cookies.
Here's
thoroughbass:
I’m hoping the discussions can be fairly holistic, in that finding a job morphs into a related set of problems about how to make that job work for you, & then when you decide it’s time to start looking for another job, you have another related set of problems in trying to figure out how to make that transition. I am equally interested in creative & analytical approaches to job satisfaction. For example, if you read about a study where certain behaviors are more successful than others, you could present that to the group. Or we can talk about job fantasies, or use the rest of the things we do & our senses of humour to put it all in perspective. Personal experience is also welcome, of course, because of the process of how people relate emotionally to their work, since, let’s face it, the people & things we work with cause anxiety, sadness, frustration, admiration, lust, disinterest, envy, anger. Like your family, your workmates are usually thrust upon you, & even when you can choose them, that’s no guarantee of roses & puppies. If you work in a team, there is always the possibility of conflict. If you work alone, you have the spectre of dread & procrastination. If you are very disciplined, you may feel like you cannot express what you want, so you quash it. If you are undisciplined, you might not get anything done.
I'm on-board. Anyone else interested?
