I'm assuming you meant the latter MP - Tommy McAvoy certainly didn't get elected on the strength of saying he'd take my mum round the houses of parliament.
I don't live in Ashford, he didn't campaign in Horsham and I can't find his campaign material online, so I don't know if he got in on the basis of saying he'd do this - I expect he probably did, because I know that immigration has been the hot topic in Ashford ever since it became the first stop for the Eurostar. I hope he gets reelected on the basis that he did do it, though.
He's a Tory, but I don't know why - by which I mean I don't know if his immigration policy is affected on theirs, happens to be concurrent with theirs, or if that's just who his parents voted for in a very Gilbert & Sullivan-style way. What's the point of the Tories, I think that's a seperate discussion :)
And while obviously, I don't know what was going through the minds of everyone in Ashford when they voted for him and so I don't know what the breakdown of reasons for voting was, I'd like to hope at least some of them were swayed by what he does, rather than purely what party was next to his name. Since that's why I vote, and since I know a number of floating voters who are floating voters for the same reason, I feel fairly confident in taking the guess that some of them were - I don't think you and I are the only people who look at individuals rather than parties.
That's true and I respect that more than party voting, however by whatever means you pick the "individual" if they are part of a party you are just helping the party system continue.
I can see your point, though I still feel its a better way of making one's point, since it means you still get a say in who's you're local MP and local MPs can make a difference. It doesn't resolve the problem of too strong parties though, I accept that.
