I Once Had a Dream of a Boy Who Could Dance
prompt: qotd: scene: post-tpm to rotj: anakin’s first lesson was learning to listen. and the first lesson’s always the easiest to learn
“You can’t hear a whisper if you’re constantly shouting, Anakin.” Not padawan. Not yet. Neither of them are used to their new found situation. “Relax. It’s easier to use the Force when you are in peace.” Obi-Wan offers a hesitant smile. “Let’s try this again, shall we?”
Anakin follows Obi-Wan down. For years and years, he follows Obi-Wan, whispers his name, whispers his comments and concerns and questions. Whispers his actions and whispers his feelings. He will be a Jedi.
But then there’s war and Padmé and his padawan to whom he rarely calls padawan, especially when they’re alone. Palpatine becomes a greater friend and Obi-Wan tries not to push him away-he’s feeling this war similar to how he is feeling it. It’s hard not to shout, but constantly, constantly, he finds himself shouting at Obi-Wan, at Ahsoka, at his troopers. But he never stops listening.
you can’t hear a whisper if you’re constantly shouting.
When the Republic falls, the Jedi fall, he falls, he listens to the Force in peace, as quiet as can be. He enforces to please the Empire, to please his master, to please the people.
you can’t hear a whisper if you’re constantly shouting.
It takes nineteen years for him to realize that he never was listening-not truly. Because, suddenly, those small rebellions have grown into an Alliance, and half of the galaxy is protesting, and the Empire has mess after mess to clean up.
Then suddenly, Sidious whispers that he has a son, and the Alliance is whispering of spies, and Luke Skywalker is shouting hatred and he has to wonder if Obi-Wan taught this boy-his son-that you whisper so you can hear other whispers.
Then the coin turns and Sidious is shouting of death while Luke is whispering of hope and the Alliance is shouting of victory. He’s lost and can’t hear, though he tries and tries because you can’t hear anything if you’re shouting. And right when he’s ready to break-he’s saving his son and telling him to tell his sister-his daughter-Leia that Luke has always been right.
you can’t hear a whisper if you’re constantly shouting.
(The first lesson is always the easiest to learn. He doesn’t know that he never needed to learn the lesson. Because the Force is always with him. Because everyone was already listening.
He doesn’t know this. Not yet. But he will.
After all, he is always listening.)
