[like we were just soldiers]

Darth Vader's contempt for the Death Star is well-known at Court, so his frequent presence on it during the final stages of construction can only be explained by some arcane pressure from the Emperor - the outward byplay of some sort of intricate maneuvering on his part, no doubt. It's not likely done to make Tarkin happy - among other reasons, Tarkin's distaste for Vader's company is even more widely known than his more imposing rival's dissatisfaction for his pet project, and in any case the Grand Moff of Pretentiousness would by no means want the Dark Lord's presence anywhere near his projected triumph - so Bail's guess is that it's part of some larger plot to make Vader- the outward byplay of some sort of intricate maneuvering on his part, no doubt. It's not likely done to make Tarkin happy - among other reasons, Tarkin's distaste for Vader's company is even more widely known than his more imposing rival's dissatisfaction for his pet project, and in any case the Grand Moff of Pretentiousness would by no means want the Dark Lord's presence anywhere near his projected triumph - so Bail's guess is that it's part of some larger plot to make Vader unhappy: an endeavor in which the Emperor, for no obvious reason, seems to take a vicious delight. Vader's loyalty to his dark master borders on the fanatical; he may just be the only being in the galaxy who deserves Palpatine's absolute trust - and yet the Sith seems perennially determined to find new ways to keep his enforcer miserable. Witness that torturous suit, when so many better and kinder alternatives have been developed in the last few years.

None of it really makes sense.

Who's angling for what, and what the hell Vader is thinking, are questions Bail would like to pose to an old friend of Obi-Wan Kenobi's: Vader's own sometime-assistant and current (reputed) paramour, one Lady Areth Vjun. Bail has doubts about how much "amour" her position actually entails; the Imperial Court seems to accept her status, but Bail Organa has a better idea than most of the sheer physical damage that keeps Vader locked inside his suit, and also of how little he would have to do to keep Areth around under any circumstances; her devotion to him runs even deeper than Vader's to Palpatine.

Now would be an excellent time to ask her about it, with the Emperor gearing up to dissolve the Senate and activate the Death Star's weaponry, except that she is inconveniently out of pocket. Bail hasn't seen her - nobody has seen her - in over a year. The rumor at the court is that Darth Vader drove her finally mad and is keeping her locked in his castle on the planet which gave her its name; for all Bail knows, it might be true - with the caveat that for her it wouldn't be much of a drive.

As the Death Star nears completion and Leia becomes more deeply embedded in the plot to thwart its successful deployment, Bail thinks his old ally's timing could have been better - but there's nothing he can do about it right now, and soon it's too late.
