"She's lost the will to live"

The medi-droid's words resounded in Obi-Wan's mind as he felt the life force draining from Padmé. It was incomprehensible that this beautiful young woman could possibly have given up all hope. She had her whole life in front of her, and she had just brought two new lives -- hope personified -- into the universe...didn't she desire to stay here with them? To nurture them and guide them and watch them grow? Maybe she thought they wouldn't be safe, or that she couldn't even be with them if she did live... Obi-Wan wanted to gather her in his arms and assure her that he'd take care of them, all of them... they'd flee to a remote planet where he could protect them from Vader and the Empire. The four of them could forge a new life together.

Obi-Wan squeezed Padmé's hand, offering tangible physical comfort while he focused healing Force energy into her... but he had the terrible feeling that it wouldn't be enough to save her. The mind was a powerful thing and if hers had decided life wasn't worth living...

Her voice was a feeble whisper. “Obi-Wan...”

Padmé, my love -- hold on! It's not over! I love you, I've always loved you... I know you loved Anakin but in time perhaps you could learn to love me... I could wait, however long it takes.

If he'd had the slightest inkling that she returned some of his feelings, he might have voiced them. But it wasn't him that she wanted; it was the one who had done this to her.

Padmé struggled for breath. "There... is good in him. I know there is... still..."

Her last thought was of Anakin, and it was a lie.

For a brief moment, the unbearable pain of it all threatened to overtake him, and Obi-Wan could almost understand how one could 'lose the will to live.' But his mind would not allow such an indulgence, and he quickly released his emotions into the Force. He was a Jedi, whether there remained an Order to serve or not, and he would do his duty. Presently his duty was to discuss with Yoda and Bail the future of these twins who would never know their birth parents.

He had a feeling the tears would find him in due time.
