Summary:  'At some point, someone thought that what Atlantis really needed was a karaoke machine'

At some point, someone thought that what Atlantis really needed was a karaoke machine.  She thinks it was John, or maybe Rodney, but she knows that she wasn’t the one to requisition the infernal thing.  When she’d checked over the requisition forms for the city she had found no mention of it, but when it was beamed down from the Daedalus a few minutes ago to stand right in front of her, the look on her right hand man’s face as he saw it gave away who had secretly ordered the machine.  As if catching himself before he started rubbing his hands together in glee he glanced up to seeElizabeth raising that infamous eyebrow at him.  He tossed a glance at Rodney next to him, indicating a quick escape from the Gate room was imminent and Elizabeth moved to intercept the two before they could implement their plan.

John stopped short when he found Elizabeth standing in their way, arms crossed over her chest, Rodney running into his back with a muffled ‘Umph!’

“John…”

“Elizabeth…”

“Would you mind explaining to me just what that,” indicating the machine with a nod of her head.  “Is doing in my Gate room?”

John and Rodney looked back at the machine, then each other, gaping like fish, “Well…” “You see…”

“Yes…” Elizabeth looked at the pair expectantly as they floundered for an explanation.  She focussed her attention on the scientist avoiding her eye line behind her military commander, knowing he would crack first.  “Rodney…”  He squirmed behind Sheppard- her plan was working.

“Alright! It was his idea!”

“Rodney!” Sheppard hissed at him.  He sighed and looked back at Elizabeth guiltily, “Yeah, all right, I requisitioned it, but really it was all Cadman’s idea!  She said it would be a great boost for morale and after going to that celebration on M7G-139 I thought she was right.  So…I ordered this,” he swept his arm towards the machine in a grand gesture and grinned at her.  She didn’t look impressed.  “I’m sure I sent you a memo…” he quipped in an attempt to make her smile.  He succeeded and felt the relief wash over him as the corner of the mouth quirked up at him followed closely by acceptance filling her eyes.

“All right!” she laughed.  “Fine, you can keep it, but that means you two take all responsibility for both the machine and anything that happens as a consequence of having it here.”

**

The first time the machine was used, most people were awkward and uncomfortable with performing in front of people. Most people except Laura Cadman that is, who before she had finished her first beer, had sung Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and

The evening was going well, all off duty personnel were in the mess hall participating in some long overdue downtime.  A slightly raised stage had been erected at the far end of the room with the dreaded karaoke machine and microphone stand set up on the decking.  Elizabeth looked at the machine with disdain.  She hated singing.  Had done since her mother made her sing Amazing Grace at her father’s funeral.

All right, so maybe hate was too strong a word to describe how she really felt about singing.  She enjoyed it, was pretty good at it actually, but she had found that in her adult life there wasn’t that much she wanted to sing about.  Ever since her father’s funeral she had only really connected singing anywhere other than the shower with negative things.

As such, Doctor Elizabeth Weir had absolutely no intention of ever mounting that stage, taking the microphone in her hands and singing her heart out for the whole expedition to see.

Which is why, when she did all this, she was hugely surprised by herself.  Of course, there was one influencing factor in her apparent decision; John Sheppard.  John was the one who took her by the hand and dragged her up on the stage after convincing her that singing a duet with him would be a brilliant idea.  As they sang their way through Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue’s Kids, sharing amused looks as Rodney bristled from his edge of the room.

A few drinks later saw John Sheppard mounting the stage to sing Take It Easy by The Eagles.  He was quite good in Elizabeth’s opinion, but when he started singing the second verse in her direction, she blushed pink up to her ears and was secretly thrilled that he thought of her while performing.

It took a couple more songs before he got up on stage again to sing.  This time, he chose a song by The Who ‘Love Reign O’er Me’.  Again she got the slightly odd sort of territorial feeling that he was singing his song to her and anyone else who happened to hear was incidental.

Which inspired her to get up as he finished, after flicking through the song books to find the song she wanted and get Chuck (the unofficial DJ of the evening if not the expedition) to programme her song into the machine.

John gave her a surprised yet confused look as she passed him on her way to the microphone.  He turned to face her as she stepped down from the stage, staying almost right in front of her as she began to sing Evanesence’s ‘Anywhere’. She was surprised when this song had caught her attention in the book and she presumed it was a surprise to others by the looks on a lot of their faces, however, despite her general dislike for lots of heavy metal or rock music, she found this particular song particularly beautiful.

She swallowed heavily before starting to sing nervously, her hands twining around each other.  She smiled when she looked up and saw couples taking to the centre of their improvised dance floor, especially when she saw Marcus Lorne take hold of Kate Heightmeyer’s hand and lead her into the fray.

Dear my love, haven't you wanted to be with me
And dear my love, haven't you longed to be free
I can't keep pretending that I don't even know you
And at sweet night, you are my own
Take my hand

We're leaving here tonight
There's no need to tell anyone
They'd only hold us down
So by the morning light
We'll be half way to anywhere
Where love is more than just your name

I have dreamt of a place for you and I
No one knows who we are there
All I want is to give my life only to you
I've dreamt so long I cannot dream anymore
Let's run away, I'll take you there

We're leaving here tonight
There's no need to tell anyone
They'd only hold us down
So by the mornings light
We'll be half way to anywhere
Where no one needs a reason

Forget this life
Come with me
Don't look back you're safe now
Unlock your heart
Drop your guard
No one's left to stop you

Forget this life
Come with me
Don't look back you're safe now
Unlock your heart
Drop your guard
No one's left to stop you now

We're leaving here tonight
There's no need to tell anyone
They'd only hold us down
So by the mornings light
We'll be half way to anywhere
Where no one needs a reason

Almost as soon as she had stepped down from the stage to great applause, John grabbed her hand and led her down the corridor outside to a neighbouring room.

“All right, Elizabeth.  What was that?”

His response threw her completely.  She hadn’t expected this at all.  To be honest, in her half drunken state she had expected him to drag her away to have his way with her, at the least a drunken fumble like before.  If the expression on John’s face had been anything other than what it was she would probably have giggled at that last thought.  “I…I thought you were singing to me.  So I…I thought I’d…sing back to you.  I thought it described…us…”

“Yes!  It does! A little too well don’t you think?!  You may as well have broadcast the fact that we’re in love with each other to the whole SGC and the IOA!”

She closed her mouth which had been gaping as she automatically prepared to defend herself.  “What?” she asked before her brain caught up with what he’d said.  “You’re in love with me?” she asked in a small voice, unable to stop the grin from slowly spreading over her face.

“Oh God!  Yes!  Yes I am!  But we don’t need the IOA sniffing around thinking I’ve, y’know, corrupted you!” his arms flailed and made him look helpless in front of her.  His gaze turned on her, eyes serious as he approached her.  “They can’t know that all I do all day is stop myself from doing this…”

Before she could respond he had taken her head between his hands, tilted her face up to his and kissed her fiercely and possessively, leaving Elizabeth feeling like she were in some sort of Jane Austen novel.  When he pulled away to rest their foreheads together she was breathless, her mind desperately trying to catch up with what was happening - a task with which the amount of alcohol she had imbibed did not help.  After regaining some of her breath she could only think of one thing to say.

“Why?”

He pulled away from her slightly and looked down on her blissful expression; eyes closed, lips parted her head still in his hands and tilted up to face him.  “Why what?” he asked gently as he soaked up the vision before him, planning on never forgetting what she looked like in this moment for the rest of his life.

She looked up at him, looking dazed, either from the kiss he’d just laid on her or the alcohol she’d drunk earlier.  He hoped it wasn’t the latter.  “Why do you stop yourself?” she asked quietly, her eyes focussed on his.

His gaze flickered down her face to her lips as a wave of heat ran through him at her words, before cursing  himself, leaning down and kissing her again - doing a much more thorough job of it this time around.  They kissed until the need for air overrode their need to trace every inch of each others mouths. Four years of working side-by-side, unconsciously acknowledging the mutual attraction between them had left them desperate to know each other more intimately.  Her hands crept up from where they had landed on his waist over his chest and into his hair as he pulled her flush against his body.  He smiled against her lips as she moaned in the back of her throat, then gasped as she grabbed him by  his lapels and dragged him forwards, crashing them both against the wall behind her.

“Oh God…” he all but whimpered against her lips.  She laughed at him wickedly as she pulled him even closer, wrapping one leg around his waist bringing them flush against each other.

“You have an evil streak” John said as she bit his bottom lip.

She smiled up at him from beneath her eyelashes, before moving herself up to whisper in his ear “You’ll soon find out just how evil I can be” as she spoke she shifted her hips to rub against his obvious and growing erection.
