Emmy noms will be announced Thursday am. And while there are some guarantees/non-surprises (Mad Men! 30 Rock!), let's go over what SHOULD happen. First, 30 Rock will win. No other comedy comes close to touching its brilliance. It's almost laughable how bad other shows look in comparison. Nevertheless, throw a bone to "How I Met Your Mother" which comes a distant second. For performances in comedy allow me to say this: Jim Parsons deserves to win an award for his role on "Big Bang Theory". He's brilliant, and the best person to watch on television. Also, Ed Helms on "The Office" is fantastic and should be up there as well.
For drama, if it's eligible, can I just say "The Shield"? And Walton Goggins? Michael Emerson will get a nom for "Lost", but what about Josh Holloway who became front and centre as Sawyer this season? And for some local Canadian talent, Colm Feore was great as the President's husband on 24 (a great performance is reminiscent by how much you miss the character when he/she is gone, which is what happened with him). Can we also finally acknowledge the cast of "Rescue Me"? Actually, I'd love to see that show get nominated too. This year has been fantastic (the ep where Tommy and Janet went to their daughter's prep school was reminiscent of early Sopranos). And despite lackluster season finales, some love to the re-emergence of 24 and Lost would be great. Throw a bone to House, particularly Robert Sean Leonard who I love in his role as the put-upon Wilson. Finally, I know it won't happen, but "Battlestar Galactica" please. Oh, and James Callis. Yes, we all know "Mad Men" will get the award...along with it's cast. But it's fun to think of what could have been.
For animated series, despite what people might think it is not about "Family Guy vs The Simpsons". That's like arguing over a piece of rotting apple and a crappy orange. The real battle is between "King of the Hill", which should get a sentimental nod since it will end in September, and "South Park" which continues to skewer our society's ills every way possible (this year they tackled Emo kids, "Cloverfield", The Writer's Strike, Britney Spears, High School Musical, The Jonas Brothers, and Somalia Pirates). Personally, I don't think any show can touch the latter's "Margaritaville" episode which turned the troubling economy on its head with allegories from the bible.
Jay Leno may get nominated for the first time in years, purely for sentimental reasons. I say no. Dave may be in troubled waters for recent actions, but is a shoo-in for a nom especially for the way he handles non-celebrity celebrities like Paris Hilton et al. Conan is great, but the old folks are never pleased with college humour. And Jon Stewart is fun, but why does he often seem like the angriest man on television? No, for best host give the win to Craig Ferguson. Not for anything else but his brilliant rant on getting America to vote. It was amazing television that rarely happens these days: straight from the heart, truthful, and completely 100% accurate.
Finally, can Hugh Jackman get a nod for his role in the Oscars? I'm not sure, but I hope not. For best performance, there is only one deserving man - Stephen Colbert. Stephen's acting is a wonder to watch as he keeps treading the fine line from brilliant to ridiculous and back again.
