I'm sitting in my kitchen listening to my friend Simon teach Mischa, who is preparing for his audition for principal cello at the philharmonic in two weeks. This is so much better than him playing for me, since I have such mixed feelings about this audition!
I spent Friday night in Leipzig playing the Magic Flute and using the opportunity to see Simon who teaches at the music school, and Anna who had just moved her whole life there on Thursday. Her husband became a judge for the federal court, which is in Leipzig for his branch of law, and they had to move, which is a minor tragedy for all of Anna's friends in Berlin, especially Lisa and me. Ah well, life changes and you just have to adjust! they have the most gorgeous apartment I have ever seen: huge, airy, bright, hardwood floors, huge bright kitchen, large terrace and garden with a fruit-bearing pear tree. They live on the top floor of a 3 floor villa in a tony neighbourhood.
It was my first Magic Flute, and that kept me on the edge of my seat, playing a performance of a piece I have neither played or rehearsed! But
I did ok. The people in that orchestra are so familiar to me after years of subbing there, it felt almost comfortable.
I hate that I forget to update for long that I can't remember what has happened in the last 6 weeks. Christmas happened! In Baden-Baden and London, so I got the full family experience in both countries. For the first time, I felt fully integrated into Mischa's family, whew only 3 years later.
In London it was great to see my Dad doing dramatically better and being able to carry on a normal conversation with him since the operation.
Now I'm coming off a long period of solid work since the day I got back on Jan 6, in 2 weeks I have performed 2 concert programs 2 operas and recorded a CD! it's time to kick back and relax and listen to Mischa playing beautiful Schumann in the other room.
this is brought to you from my new iPad, courtesy of Marc's company. I'm discovering the joys and travails of auto-correct!
