a time to dance
rating: pg
character: Natasha Romanoff
length: drabble

summary: Belief in the divine has never been necessary for the divine to believe in you.

She crouches under the falling water, the weight of it hitting her shoulders, washing over the face she turns up to it - and in that moment, as it cascades down her nose and chin and throat, rolling over her braced fingertips and bent knees and curved back, as it pours over her, body and soul, Natasha feels the touch of something else carried with it.

Your sins are forgiven, the Light says, murmuring inside her mind and heart and passing as swiftly as the deluge of holy water. It leaves - but it also leaves behind a radiating warmth she cannot contain, cannot hold, cannot fathom.

Natasha Romanoff, killer and spy and lover and weapon and woman, opens her eyes and knows she is absolved.

Clean hands, clean mind, clean heart.

When the assassins come to murder the priest and his apprentice, she meets the killers with light steps and leaves their blood on the chapel walls, on her cleansed skin.

She cannot love a God that would have her any other way.
