Cats are interesting. I have 2 - a mother and daughter. I've recently noted some differences in their behaviors when it comes to the catbox.
Mom (Tina) is definitely more finicky. She will sometimes balance on the edge to keep from stepping in the box. She is somewhat obsessive about digging up a spot to do her business, but then often just walks away when she is done. Or will paw on the floor around but not in the catbox. And she prefers the open box.
Pearl, however, likes the covered box, and obsessively covers everything she leaves behind. It even seems to go beyond that - tonight, after Tina finished peeing and left the room, Pearl hopped into the box and covered it up. I don't think I've ever seen that before.
