I have to write this down so I don't forget.
B flat = soprano money note.
Juli Wood's theory on how to sing in your high voice register:
"Shark face": teeth bared, mouth open, jaw pushed back
back molars should be apart; feels like toothpicks are holding them up
vertical sound
Renee Fleming's similar theory, explained a little differently:
First of all, caricatures of opera singers are stereotypically pigeon-chested for a REASON. Keep your sternum high ALWAYS.
jaw "unhinges"
Imagine a "square" feeling going from the front of your mouth/lips to the back of your mouth
Almost a horizontal feeling instead of vertical. (But never spread, of course)
OOOOOH.
So my mouth should feel like
-------
l l
-------
instead of
---
l l
l l
l l
---
WOW.
So I tried it, and it really worked. Jason complained that I was being too loud... all the way from the sanctuary. He thought I was in the main hall... but I was really in the back room. Yay, resonance! So I HAVE to remember what that felt like so I can reproduce it for Juli Wood. Jason said it was beautiful and it sounded like I took all the air out of it.
