About Last Night...

Watching the states turn blue and the relief wash over the nation was momentous. Being in Chicago during the news was also historic.

What wasn't inspiring was the passage of Prop 8 in California. I went to bed optimistic, I woke up with a lump in my throat.

When rights can be awarded and taken away in a breath, decades of work blown away like dust on a table, instead of a silver lining on a dark day, the passage of Prop 8 felt like thunderheads in the distance of an otherwise beatific moment.

My heart is heavy. I've celebrated the unparalleled joy of same sex marriage for every sliver of time it has been made available, only to hold my breath, knowing it would be fleeting.

I want to get married one day. I want it to be "real" in not only my eyes, but in the eyes of the law as well.

I hope this passage does not make it final. I hope there is more to be done. I hope the fervor and passion in the hearts of our community, allies and educated people win out the next time the option to award marriage rights to everyone is on the ballot.

It is devastating when hatred, bigotry and ignorance supersede human rights.
