Event: Please join us for an afternoon of fun and fright at our 2nd annual Halloween meetup in Providence's North Burial Ground! This event will be a Halloween-themed picnic located inside of the historic North Burial Ground**. We have a number of fun activities planned, including a short tour of the cemetery, some Halloween games, and a very spooky "story time" featuring Rhode Island legends and ghost stories. Because this is a Halloween meetup, we'd like to encourage everyone to wear their best Halloween-themed Lolita coordinate. While keeping to the theme is certainly not mandatory, we will be giving a prize to the Loli or Broli with the best coordinate!
Food: As with any picnic meetups, food is BYO, and we strongly encourage guests to contribute a dish of their choosing. While bringing a dish is not mandatory, the more food we have, the better the picnic will be. We will have a signup list available to keep track of who is bringing what. The meetup hosts will gladly supply plates, cups, napkins, and cutlery.
Location / Travel: To accommodate those who wish to take the T in from Boston, this meetup will be held on a Sunday afternoon from 2:30 to 6:30. There will be a train coming in to Providence at 2:15 pm, and a train leaving Providence at 7:05 pm. Because the Providence MBTA Station is not especially close to the Burial Ground, we will be providing rides to and from the event for guests taking those trains. The Burial Ground is approximately 7 minutes away from the Station by car, or approximately half an hour by foot. Walking there and back, while possible, is strongly discouraged by the meetup hosts.
As we will be in the Burial Ground until after its normal hours, we strongly encourage any guests who are driving in to park on the street and enter the Grounds at the side entrance on North Main Street. This entrance is located directly across the street from the US National Guard Armory at 1051 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904. For those with GPS units who wish to input an exact location for this entrance, please use the following coordinates: (41.849081,-71.403987). Parking is free, and one of the meetup hosts will meet you at the entrance.
Weather: As some of you may know, last year we had a bit of an issue with the weather. While we don't plan on having to deal with near-freezing temperatures (courtesy of a freak snow storm) again, we are planning on seasonably cool weather with temperatures in the mid to high 50's. Please take this into consideration when planning your coordinate. Should the temperatures unexpectedly drop to the point where an outdoor event would be unpleasant, we will be cancelling with no scheduled rain date.
** For those concerned about the apropriateness of holding an event inside of a cemetery, please know that we have permission from the Burial Ground's management to hold this event, and that we will refrain from any and all disrespectful or harmful activities. Historically, American cemeteries were designed as parks; a place for people to gather, commune with nature, have outings, view the monumental works of art, and visit the graves of those buried there. We keep this tradition alive by using the cemetery as it was intended to be used.
