So my livejournal is now accessible to readers of the 20 Watts Blog so maybe I should give a little introduction about myself?
My name is Rachel Gruber, I am a freshman Public Relations major in Newhouse. I hate saying that I am a Public Relations major because of the misconceptions that usually come along with it. I do not want to do things with celebrities and stuff, I want to be in charge of PR for a record label like Saddle Creek and someday work up to Columbia in charge of signing artists and stuff. I am from Buffalo, NY which I love with all my heart despite the fact that we are cursed i most aspects of live as a city (See: Sabres Stanley Cup Run, No Goal, Buffalo Bills Wide Right). I am a die-hard Buffalo Sabres fan regardless. I am a new member of the SU Women's Rugby team and so far I am diggin' it. My all time favorite band is Jack's Mannequin, I one time met Andrew McMahon and it was the shining moment of my life. The Decemberists are working their way up there though. And my guilty pleasure would have to be John Mayer, hands down...As a man, musician, artist, he owns. Oh, and some people (my roommate) tell me I look like Sara Bareillis. I've also heard I look like Amy Winehouse too? I don't see that at all.
With that being said, I will now continue on with the random thoughts that are my livejournal.
Current Obsession: So in anticipation of Bonnaroo (which I am way to excited for and it's like 110 days away) I am listening to all the bands coming in preparation. So I began listening to the new Rilo Kiley album. I had refused to listen to it ever since I read a review and heard it was worse than their last album and that it was written for radio. However, I am currently in love with it. Jenny Lewis is a fascinating person to me. She was a child actress, and was in one of my favorite (and any Girl Scout's for that matter) childhood movies- Troop Beverly Hills. And yet, her music has changed my view of "chick bands" aka bands where the lead singer is a woman (Note: Some people may purely identify "chick bands" as bands composed all of girls ex. Josie and the Pussycats, yet I would also view one with a woman fronting ex. Paramore, as a chick band). Of course everyone is aware of "Portions for Foxes" but the real gem I have found for the moment is "Silver Lining." Jenny's voice is soft yet soulfull and reminiscent of the 1960s, my favorite era for music. (Also the reason why I love Amy Winehouse, which most people will never understand). So, regardless of your thoughts on Jenny Lewis, chick bands, or Troop Beverly Hills (A cinematic jem, by the way- "gather round good friends of mine we're wilderness girls and it's cookie time"...) I suggest that you give a chance to "Under the Blacklight" by Rilo Kiley.
