Note: I needed to write this after the angst!fest that was Special Education. My heart wept for Kurt and this is what should've happened at Sectionals.

A tremendous feeling of shared happiness rushed through the group of friends as they partook in the most intense group hug they’d ever been in. Kurt hadn’t beamed this much since he had been a member of New Directions still, Blaine noticed from afar. The two glee clubs were standing backstage, right after having heard the announcement that they would both go to Sectionals, in what was supposed to be a formal meeting to congratulate their respective competitors. But it was the first time the New Directions gang had had the opportunity to speak to Kurt again since his sudden department and sparks had immediately flown when they had seen him emerging from the homogenous group of uniformed boys.

Mercedes and Finn had literally raced up to him, followed by Puck, Brittany and the rest. Rachel had tears in her eyes and Brittany kept blabbering on about how she thought red-and-blue striped ties were sexy. When the group ran out of breath for having squeezed each other so much they all took a small step back. Mercedes and Artie bombarded Kurt with questions and Finn just stood there, staring goofily at his stepbrother. Quinn took Kurt by his arm, leaning into his shoulder while she listened to his excited ramblings and inquiries into what had happened at McKinley since he left. Santana kept telling him she was absolutely weirded out by seeing him dressed in a plain uniform and not one of his Kurtabulous outfits. They all felt like they were caught in a delightful haze, a dimension of their own, everything else around them having disappeared completely.

After a good ten minutes of joyful chattering Kurt suddenly looked over his shoulder at Blaine, who stood watching the scene with his hands folded in front of him.

“Wait,” Kurt said when he turned to his friends again. “I need to introduce you to someone.”

He gestured for Blaine to join them and Blaine did so with an amused smirk on his face. Kurt introduced him to everyone and they all shook hands.

“And of course you already know Mercedes,” Kurt said. Blaine grinned, nodding at Mercedes who waved at him shyly.

“She did manage to make the tots available in the cafeteria again,” Kurt said and the three of them laughed.

“But…hold on,” Puck said with a puzzled expression on his face. “How is it possible that Mercedes already met him?” He looked genuinely confused and suddenly Finn did, too.

“Ah, we’ve been friends for a while before Kurt transferred to Dalton,” Blaine explained with a courteous smile. “Ever since your very suave spy mission,” he said playfully and prodded Kurt’s arm.

“Hey, I couldn’t just beat someone up, drag them into a closet, steal their jacket and lock them up just to blend in with everyone else, could I?” Kurt blushed.

“B-but…we sent him on that spy mission,” Puck said slowly, looking at Finn and Artie and then back at Kurt. His eyes widened even more. “We caused the beginning of the end,” he added ominously, his mouth hanging open a little.

Kurt laughed heartily, patting Puck on the shoulder. “That had absolutely nothing to do with why I transferred, Puck. You didn’t do anything to drive me away,” he assured him.

“Oh, just come here, dude,” Puck blurted out and leant in to hug a surprised Kurt. Finn quickly joined them. He heard the delighted squeals of Rachel, Artie and all of the others around him, and Kurt felt so good he wanted this moment to last forever. He didn’t notice Blaine staring at his feet awkwardly next to them.

Suddenly Wes cleared his throat. The group fell absolutely silent as they realized they were going to have to let Kurt go again. Almost all of the Warblers had already left. Wes and David were the only ones except for Blaine who were standing there silently, waiting for Kurt to join them. The duo’s polite but reserved faces told Kurt that he’d get reprimanded later for holding them up. Besides Blaine Kurt found each and every single Warbler (and most Dalton students in general) uptight, smug and stand-offish. He was immensely thankful for having Blaine there because without him, his now almost continual feeling of sadness would be infinitely greater. With a sharp stab of apprehension in his chest and a lump in his throat Kurt prepared himself to say goodbye to his friends once again. He knew he would see them again but he was also very aware of the fact that every goodbye was going to be harder than the one before.

When they had all hugged Kurt a couple more times he left the room with Blaine in tow. He felt his friends’ stares burning in his back and didn’t know whether he hoped they had noticed his unhappiness and desolation or not.
