An open letter to Alicia Florrick

Dear Lishy,

After watching last night’s TGW episode, I had the “say whaaaat” reaction that I’m pretty sure I was supposed to have about your little decision (bonus points for leaving me feeling shocked even though I sort of knew it was coming!).  I understand there are two more episodes that could change everything, or elucidate some things so I ( Read more... )

i think too much about teevee, the good wife

When Alicia was all "AS YOUR LAWYER I totally recommend against banging that chick," I was telling randomizer that it reminded me of that scene in Lost Girl where Lauren was like "As your *doctor* I'd prefer if you stuck with someone less *well-traveled* than Dyson" and the audience is all "uh huh, okay Hotpants."

Yes! I was like "Yes, Alicia, dispense more ~LAWYERLY ADVICE. Because that's the kind of advice lawyers usually give. You know. On who to date. Not on the LAW or anything like that."

ALICIA'S FIRST KALINDA-RELATED JEALOUSY, IT WAS SO CUTE.

Take a picture, frame it! BABY'S FIRST STEP!

--

"She stayed for you, you know."

Will's voice is quiet and smooth, the way it used to be when she'd just come back to Lockhart/Gardner, late-night Scotch and catching her up on the statutes that had changed in ten years and longing eyes. Quiet and smooth, but she still jumps, still clutches her bag tighter. She can't look at him, though.

She can't look away.

"What...what do you mean?" Her voice is very hoarse, like a broken bottle over gravel.

"She was going to run." He's looking in the room, too, past glass and empty space, to the bed. "She asked me for money...I gave her what I could. But she stayed. I couldn't figure out why, until..."

His words hang in the air, and Alicia's nails cut crescents into her palms. Until he threatened me and she was fine until I called and until I upended her entire life stick in her throat, and all she can do, all she can give right now, is a little nod. She hopes he can interpret it, can know what it means.

Kalinda always used to be able to.

She shakes, she almost doubles over, but she doesn't cry. Will puts a supportive hand on the small of her back, and they stand like that for ages, gazing into the hospital room. Eventually, the steady beeping of the monitors calms Alicia, let her unclench a little. She takes a deep, shaking, harsh breath. Then another.

Kalinda is so small in the hospital bed, against the sheets, her skin so dark against the blinding white of the walls. Eyes closed and mouth slack, she looks more at peace than she ever has.

Will's hand eventually falls away. "I'm going to go get some coffee. Do you want..." he trails off.

She shakes her head. "I'm good, but thanks," she says, and he touches her elbow briefly before he moves away. Only when he's gone does she exhale, sink into the chair right next to her.

Kalinda had sat a vigil, too, after all.

So Alicia waits.

OH GOD. YOU PUT KALINDA IN THE HOSPITAL. HOW COULD YOU, I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU. OKAY, I LOVE YOU, BUT KALINDA, BB GIRL.

I seriously could read about Alicia *getting it* over and over again. Sometimes I worry that THIS IS WHAT IT WILL TAKE because of her stupid denseness to the Epic Love.

KALINDA.

I HAVE TO TELL YOU. I was really inspired by the scene in the Once Upon a Time pilot where we find out Charming is in the hospital, comatose. There's something just so sad about that moment, to me, when the camera zooms out and he seems so isolated. PLUS I FEEL ABOUT SNOW/CHARMING WHAT I FEEL FOR KALICIA, WHICH IS TO SAY: ASFKDJ;SFJSGRGNORG!

Man, it's totally going to take Kalinda getting shot for Alicia to realize. TOTALLY. Even though I definitely think Alicia's awkwardness at the bar was a flash of jealousy over Lana (or, rather, Kalinda's potential interest in Lana)--her denial engine is just too well-developed for her to ever really go there in her mind without some huge external impetus.

-

Their first big fight since--well, since the last huge blowout, the one that ended with a hissed good that makes Alicia feel nauseous when she thinks about it now--comes when Kalinda is ready to be released from the hospital.

The doctors have all told Kalinda that she can't live on her own quite yet. Her range of motion is still limited, they explain, and her strength isn't totally back yet (she'll need physical therapy; Alicia blocks off Tuesday and Thursday mornings on her Blackberry), and she can't drive, and she can't, she can't, she can't. Kalinda is obviously not happy at the verdict, and the nurses (who she has somehow managed to wind around her little finger) spend the week giving her therapy recommendations and sneaking her chocolate ice cream to make her smile. (Alicia glowers at the third smuggled-in pint she sees, and Kalinda has the grace to look faintly abashed.)

Kalinda has nodded calmly, impassively, been charming to all the doctors, put on her "I'm taking this very seriously yes I am" face, and Alicia knows that she hasn't listened to a word they've said. So the day of Kalinda's release, Alicia breezes in with a suitcase, a pair of sunglasses, and an easy smile (she can be charming, too, when she wants). She announces to the room at large that Kalinda will be coming home with her.

Kalinda does not look happy.

Alicia doesn't care. The kids are more than happy to stay with Peter for a few weeks, at the house, and Kalinda can't live alone. And Kalinda won't trust anyone else to take care of her. That they both know.

It's dangerous, Kalinda protests, and You shouldn't have to, and It'll be awkward, and Did you miss the part where my husband shot me? and What will work think? (What she doesn't say: I don't want you to see me like this. Alicia hears the echoes anyway.)

Alicia wins. Kalinda sulks for a solid forty-eight hours before she accepts Alicia's peace offering (sesame chicken with race that has way too much soy sauce to be anywhere near innocuous. It's against the dietary rules, but Kalinda inhales it).

So Alicia doesn't. See Kalinda like that, that is. She's very respectful, very cautious, turns away at all the right moments. She never sees the scar, never sees Kalinda anything less than fully dressed (though the first time she'd seen sweatpants and a t-shirt, it was so incongruous she laughed for five minutes, and Kalinda knew she was joking but was a little miffed anyway; Alicia let her pick the movie that night, and Kalinda picked Lord of the Rings just to spite her).

It's--easy to fall into a routine with Kalinda, who wakes up early and always puts the coffee on, who secretly loves to watch Scooby-Doo (even if she'll never, ever admit it), who eats sugary cereal and salad for lunch, who looks so proud when she cooks limp noodles slathered in warm sauce (Alicia swallows, smiles). Soon enough Kalinda is healed, and Alicia thinks she'll miss her.

So she starts plotting to get Kalinda back.

HEY. HEY, DID I *TELL* YOU THAT ONE OF MY SECRET TROPE-Y WISHES FOR THIS STORYLINE IS THAT IT WILL END WITH KALINDA HAVING TO STAY WITH ALICIA FOR SOME SORT OF EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, OR DID YOU JUST GUESS?? LIKE -- I THINK THAT WOULD BREAK ME. IN ALL THE GOOD WAYS THIS TIME.

God, Alicia. I can't believe it might take MAJOR BODILY INJURY AND NEAR-DEATH to get through to you. You are a TOUGH COOKIE, babe.

Soooo. Are you going to make this into a legit fic? Because that seems like the thing to do.

NO YOU DID NOT. BUT. ~LOOOOOOOVE. THAT WOULD BE ALICIA'S GRAND GESTURE, TOTALLY. IT WOULD BE HUGE FOR THEM. AND IF ALICIA'S KIDS WOULD DISAPPEAR, I COULD TOTES SEE IT HAPPENING. And you just know that Alicia would secretly (or not-so-secretly) love it! Having Kalinda at her beck and call? Yes please!

Alicia is ridic.

I'm thinking about it! I don't feel like there would be a ton more to write, though. "And then they had sexytiemz and fell madly in love. Done!" ;)

"And then they had sexytiemz and fell madly in love. Done!"

Um, you KNOW I appreciate when this is expounded upon in DETAIL missy. Make it happen! OTP FIC IS AN EXCELLENT BABY GIFT. :) :)

(But really, appreciate even these little bits. Why aren't people writing more fic now? We were left with such a juicy cliffhanger!)

Ha! I will make an attempt then. :)

You know, I think it's a combination of things. Part of me thinks that S3 was just such a letdown that it just hasn't really sparked the fandom's creativity at all (fic across the board is so down for the fandom in general). Part of me wonders if the Kalicia in the last few episodes was just too little, too late. But I also wonder if it isn't--I mean, their love is so epic in CANON, you know? I'm a little bit like, how can fic even compare to the EPIC BIG BANG LOVE we've ALREADY been shown? HOW CAN WE WRITE ANYTHING THAT COULD COMPARE???

Well, properly understood, that's AWESOME, and it really bodes well for season 4. How am I supposed to pass the next four months again?

You're so right. Stuff like TAKING A BULLET FOR LOVE is really, usually relegated to the fic realm, unless we're talking cop procedurals or something. NOW what do write? The wedding and babies, I guess. :)

But yeah, also, most of the make-up scenarios have already been written, from the uber-angsty to the sweet and tender. Sometimes it feels like it makes more sense to just hang out and wait to see how it REALLY plays out.

BUT THERE'S STILL PORN, PEOPLE.

YES. And the writers--like, it feels earned on this show, you know? Unlike other shows (Lost Girl, I'm looking at YOU), it's so epic even in canon because we've seen Kalinda suffer and sweat and hurt for it. So it's more believable.

But yeah, also, most of the make-up scenarios have already been written, from the uber-angsty to the sweet and tender.

I do think that next year it will be easier to write for them, just because we'll have more of a sense of where they are as they begin to get back together.

ALWAYS PORN.

Oh God, the only thing really epic about Lost Girl is the sex. If you combined TGW's epic quality/Kalinda's epic love, and LG's epic sex scenes, I'd just never leave the house again. I'd be sitting here watching reruns on loop for the rest of my life. Maybe it's better that this doesn't happen.

Strangely enough, I haven't at all lost my muse, for writing for these two. I just don't have any time or energy to do anything about it!

I DON'T KNOW, I AM HOPEFUL. I'm anxiously waiting to see what becomes of my fanfic writing career; I'm told people with children occasionally do still write fanfic. Someone needs to give me a crash course in time management, omg.

Ha! Every grad student I know who has kids swears up, down, and sideways that having kids made them so much better at managing their time. I guess you can be a great test subject! ;)
