She’s sitting next to him, hair blowing in the light breeze, beer cup clutched in her hand as the team takes the field.

He watches as she shades her eyes from the sun, sips from the cup, and then whistles, an honest-to-God wolf whistle, at the second baseman.

He can’t help it, he laughs.

Loudly.

She narrows her eyes at him as his arm falls across her shoulders, but it only causes him to laugh harder. And now she’s laughing, too, pink flushing her cheeks in the afternoon sun as they wait for the game to start.

The past month has been a whirlwind. Scary and crazy at times, but-her fingers drift across the back of his neck as she leans in to ask him to explain the infield fly rule one more time-he knows he hasn’t been this relaxed (happy) in a long time.

--

He almost can’t believe it’s been six months.

To track it on a timeline would be silly not to mention incredibly nerdy, but he almost feels like he needs to to appreciate all that’s happened.

He’s standing in her apartment in jeans and not much else. His t-shirt is thrown over the back of the couch and he grins as she slips into it, her fingers twisting in the hem.

“Morning, counselor.”

It rumbles against his back as she slides her arms around his waist and he has half the urge to lean back against her before he remembers the toast.

“Mmm, morning yourself.” Leaning forward, he rescues the bread from burning and then turns, kissing her slowly, his hand tangling in her hair.

They eat in comfortable silence, her knee nudging against him as she answers texts from Zach, who’s at overnight college visit, and Kalinda, who’s teasing her about making him a kept man for the past two months.

Clean up is quick and, after avoiding the temptation of a joint shower, they soon find themselves walking out of the elevator towards his car.

“You have any idea where Diane’s going to put you?” She opens the door to hers, sliding the briefcase onto the seat before turning to face him.

He shrugs in answer, a smile growing on his face as he steps closer, pinning her against the door. His mouth covers hers for a long minute before he turns and walks to the driver’s side of his car.

“I’ll see you there.”

“Bet I win.” She says, closing the door and backing out.

His key turns in the ignition and he grins as some alternative rock music Grace had been blaring on their trip to Navy Pier comes streaming out.

It’s always darkest before the dawn.

Yes, he’s ready to go back, but where he’s working-corner office or not, as partner or associate-doesn’t even matter as long as she’s beside him.

ahhhhh - this is even better than I was hoping. I love how you explain how the months are different for him. And how he's spending his free time at the ball park, because really, where else would he spend his afternoons in the spring? and then you brought in Alicia!! honestly, words can't express how much I love this!!!!

Love this even more after the second reading. I like that he studies new case law, and considers calling Celeste for a poker game out of sheer boredom and desperation. You decribe the months of his suspension perfectly.

And then he gets on track, and get back with Alicia!! And they're really together and he doesn't care if he no longer has the big corner office because Alicia's in his life. oh Will!!

And this "he knows he hasn’t been this relaxed (happy) in a long time" - awwww, makes me so happy!!!

Wow, this might be my favorite of your Willicia stories yet, Liz! I love the pace and the arc of it -- Will's dark moments at being torn away from his defining role, the potential downward spiral looming right around the corner (I REALLY felt that... how lost he felt), and the ray of hope that Alicia brought back into his life and how it carried him through the rest of those six months. Some really lovely details in there that make everything seem particularly true-to-life -- not too dramatic or too easy, just very human. Really beautiful job!

Aww J, I'm glad that the shift of emotions came through so nicely for you, and that they didn't seem too over the top. Finding something for each month was a little overwhelming at first, but it was fun to play with the details and make them all wind together.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting ♥

I'm so happy that you enjoyed it. Yep, the title, and lyric later in the fic, is from "Shake It Out" - nice catch! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
