He pulls her aside one afternoon, after an exhausting table read.

“Hey, Jules!”

“I’m sorry, I can’t really hang around today.”

“Just a second.” He stops. “I need to tell you something.”

She wonders if he’s about to pull a prank on her (sometimes this happens); she wonders when she’ll stop being so gullible, but follows him anyway. He pulls her into a corner of the hallway, trying not to crowd her...which, sort of happens anyway. He is not an awkward person, but he can’t help it in this instance. His attempt to quell the moments inconvenience only makes things more uncomfortable.

“What’s up?”

“They’re going to kill me, err, Will. They’re going to kill off Will.”

“What?” She is disbelieving, and it hits her. “Oh, oh. I get it, good one! Who put you up to this? This one was really clever.”

“I’m serious.”

“Come on, quit being an asshole.” She laughs. “It really was good. You totally had me.”

“I’m not kidding. My contract’s up, the writers discussed it with me last week and I told them I thought it was a fantastic idea.” He holds up his fingers. “Scout’s honor.”

“You’re not joking.” Her demeanor drops. “Have you told anybody else yet?”

“Nope. I asked if I could tell Christine but they steamrolled me.”

“Am I supposed to know about it?”

“Not exactly.”

“Do you know when?”

“Not yet, just that it’s going to be in the next couple episodes.”

“Oh fuck. That’s really soon.”

“Yeah.”

She is upset. She doesn’t know if she’s upset with him (she knows she’ll miss pretend orgasms under elaborately matched bedsets), upset with the writers (like everyone was upset with Josh when it took twenty takes to get him throwing things off her desk right because they couldn’t stop laughing), or somehow herself for not enjoying the time they’d spent together enough (and how she was shocked the first time they kissed because she didn’t think she would enjoy it that much). Now, everything is coming to a close.

They hug. He runs his arms with affirmation up and down her back. This is the best decision, they realize, but it is difficult.

***
The day of the table read comes and goes. He keeps mum on the plot, but when the script has been read he pulls up his phone perfectly timed and Nancy Sinatra echoes: Bang bang my baby shot me down.

“You dick!” Archie laughs through her welling tears, and a wave of laughter ripples through the group. Julianna reaches for his free hand under the table. He takes the offer and gives her hand a squeeze.
***
“I’m so glad the last time I get to see you isn’t in death makeup.” Her heart is heavy. Everyone’s hearts are heavy.

“Yeah, that stuff was gnarly.”

“Are you ready?” He shrugs, neither of them have much choice.

“At least I get to spend tomorrow pretending to leave you sexy voicemails.” She laughs.

“But you can’t come back after that.”

“Who knows, maybe they’ll change it to the Good Zombie Wife?” Then they laugh together.

“Stop, stop. I think I have to be crying over your dead body.” They can’t stop laughing. They sit at their marks, waiting for lights to be hung.

After a few hours of forced tempestuousness, the director calls cut and the crew lets out a collective exhale.

“Won’t see you around for awhile.” She is bummed. Everyone is bummed.

“Probably not ‘til the Emmy’s.” He shoots her a sly wink, and she grabs his shoulder.

“Don’t be a stranger.” He pulls her in for a hug.

“Never.”

Others call for his attention, and in his wake she stays situated on a fake desk wishing this day hadn’t come.

Does really enjoying the idea of Julianna being blindsided by Josh’s departure (and Will’s death) make me a bad person? Cause I do ^^ I blame all the narrative stalemate and waste and shipwrecking on her, so…

I particularly love all the reasons why Julianna is upset - hehe, the fake orgasms ^^ Be upset Jules, it’s for your own good!

Nice funny bittersweet goodbye, thank you!

Oh man, I don't think I even realized how much I wanted this until you wrote it! Count me in as one of the ones satisfied by Julianna's blind-siding -- I love this image of their friendship (and maybe a hint of UST there? Is that just wishful thinking??) and really do hope that it will transcend TGW just in this way. Thank you so much for filling the prompt! (And I think you broke TGW RPF's Julianna/Josh cherry, so congrats on that. :)

This is such a great mix of funny, sweet, and sad. I do enjoy Julianna being out of the loop, since she seems to be so influential behind the scenes when it comes to the Alicia/Kalinda relationship. So this was a tad refreshing. ;)

(like everyone was upset with Josh when it took twenty takes to get him throwing things off her desk right because they couldn’t stop laughing)

Haha, this is now part of my head!cannon!

I'm p sure she's partially running the show, as she's listed as an exec. producer, but my thought process was that TV is essentially a writer's medium so I figured they'd have the first say on everything that goes down.

I don't know the exact specifics on the Kalicia situation behind the scenes, but I'd heard that as well. (Her being influential with regards to it.) I'd be interested to know what her role was in okaying Will's death in addition to Kalinda/Alicia's relationship! I just kind of guessed when I was writing this : )

Next member of "Club Enjoying Blindsided Jules" reporting for duty! :-)

I really enjoyed this a lot. I love TGW RPF, why isn't there more, more MORE? Thanks so much for adding to our precious little collection.
