The lights of Chicago blare through their office windows. Diane thumbs through case notes, Will does the same across her desk. Neither of them know what time it is.

“I never thought we’d win that.” He says. She chuckles across the table.

“I never thought I’d be relieved he turned down that plea deal.” She puts the papers down on her desk.

“I never thought the term ‘jury of your peers’ could be so accurate." Will gesticulates wryly, Diane looks to him with disbelief.

"Their ignorance was astounding.”

"Or we're just good at our jobs." He laughs, putting his papers down as well and fishing a bottle out of his blazer pocket. "You want a little more?”

“You’ve already poured half of it into my glass.”

“Diane,” he wiggles his eyebrows, “come on we’re celebrating.”

“I don’t know.” She looks down at her nicely laid case file, trying to decide if she can manage more work for the evening. Before she can decide, her glass is in his hand.

“It’s Highland Park. It would be depressing if I had to finish it by myself.” She closes her eyes in defeat. Though more of a bourbon person, Diane doesn’t object to a little variety now and again. She grabs her glass, and waits for Will to finish pouring his.

“To a well earned victory.”

“I think you mean to our absurdly good luck.” He nods in agreement, and they toast.

After a few moments of sipping in silence, enjoying the taste of neat scotch slip down their throats and relishing in a hung jury; Diane puts her empty glass down.

“I need to get going.” She stands, and slides her chair in.

“You didn’t drive, did you?” Will does the same.

“I have late dinner plans.”

“Ah.” She tries to walk past him, but he grasps her wrist and pulls her in. Her lips taste exquisite. Unfortunately, though he’s intoxicated, he’s not intoxicated enough to quell the growing discomfort in his stomach. She pulls away, and puts her hand on his shoulder.

“Let me call you a cab.” She smiles.

“Thanks.” He puts his hand on his mouth, trying to erase his odd decisions. She follows him outside, and shuts the light off in her office; leaving the case file spread out for tomorrow.

Oh man, I love this... the taste of what might have been lingers heavily after this one. I really did love them together. Thank heavens for ficathon for a few last memories that I'm totally making head-canon. Thank you for writing!!

I don't think I recognise your username (but I'm so sleep-deprived I could so easily be wrong there) -- is this a first TGW fic from you?

I really enjoyed this. I am going to miss scenes (well, sort of) like this so much on the show now!

I'm not sure, actually. I found this thread through tumblr, and I keep my LJ set to private. I'm going to miss the two of them as well :c

This is so lovely. Diane and Will must have spent a ridiculous amount of time together after-hours over the years, so I can absolutely see this happening.
