Eh, this episode felt mediocre. But I was quite happy to see grown up Idgie Threadgoode show up : )
Speaking of guests, where have all of the reoccuring guest stars been this season? I'm kind of missing our rotation of staple judges. Don't get me wrong, I like Jeffrey Tambor. But... I'd like some of my old favorites back.
I guess the thing that I find unbelievable is how the Kings removed Kalinda's episode 5.1 plot with Juliet Rylance because they were being "overly cautious" with K after the whole Nick debacle. . . So, I guess that caution has been thrown to the wind with yet another reincarnation of the Kalinda vs white-male-thug-foil? Did that not trigger any red lights in their heads? I'm going to give the writers the benefit of the doubt here (surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to go at it a third time... hmmmm), especially after the "I don't believe in female investigators" line. Them's fighting words. But I'm far more inclined now to believe that Rylance's plot got dumped simply due to the fact that they wanted to focus on other more Alicia-related plots.
And I just can't with Robyn and Alicia. It makes me too sad. I'm now a firm believer that Robyn was a character solely created to deepen my K/A depression.

Showing my age, but I had a minor crush on her as a teenager from minor films like "Some Kind of Wonderful". She was on the official list of actresses my bestie and I would go to see in anything they did.
Having a guess, but I think there must have been a reshuffling/reshooting/rewriting thing going on here. The press release came out for 5:09 incredibly late and given that TGW usually shouts guest stars from the rooftops, I find Mary Stuart Masterson arriving unheralded (unless I missed it?) pretty anomalous.

I like him too! But having him in 3 of 9 episodes without any of the old old faves seems unbalanced. We have had repeat judges this year (Judges Chase, Stanek, and Politi) but they aren't the iconic ones.

Robyn twists me in knots. I like the character, I really like her with Kalinda. I mostly like the performance (I think JW overdoes it, interestingly I think she does better with Archie than with the other regulars or on her own.) But while I didn't believe it at first, I now can't see her as anything but a way for the Kings to write themselves out of the problem of Kalinda and Alicia not being allowed to have scenes together.

Agreed! Such a talented, yet underrated actress. She is a sorely missed presence in films and TV these days. I kept hoping she would have a cameo throughout the seasons of Weeds, if only to see a MSM and MLP reunion. Aaaaaaaand I feel like Watts was totally a lesbian in Some Kind of Wonderful.

There were no trumpets or heralds to be found for the most-deserving MSM. : ( I hope the reason why was reshooting, and not the creators just being lazy.

That's all I can see it as, really. jess was brought in so the new firm could have an investigator without JM and AP having scenes together. She's an enjoyable character, but the scenes of Robyn and Alicia going over evidence together literally make my heart feel crushed. But I really feel like all her illegal activities from two episodes ago are going to come back to bite her in the ass. Why else would the writers go through all of the effort of showing us how very illegal/un-Kalindaesque Robyn's "investigating" was?
I've really got my hopes up for Kalinda in the 100th episode. I know I shouldn't, but I do. I just want Kalinda to be Kalinda again, and maybe even have her own storyline. *Gasp* Shocking, I know. I don't even enjoy the show now. But I can't. Stop. Watching. If only for the hope that maybe, just maybe, we'll have a return to the Kalinda of old.
