A few years ago, I was running around with a group that didn't necessarily discourage being myself so much as encouraged being a different version of myself. I learned a lot about myself in that time. I fully believe that it's possible to be many different versions of yourself and be okay with that. I can put on fishnets and heels, roll my hair and glue on eyelashes, listen to Elvis and Hank and be okay with that being me.
But just now I put on a Beatles album and it was so lovely and it made me think. I like the Beatles. I like Elvis. These things are not mutually exclusive. It's possible to like both. I like expensive craft beers and I like PBR. It's possible to like both. It's okay to be the person in a t-shirt sometimes. It's okay to get dressed up. You don't need excuses and you don't need reasons. You just do it.
And maybe this is really what being yourself is about. It's about respecting all of different aspects as well as accepting them. As Popeye would say, "I is who I is."
