Merlin fic recs of an AU nature, for the benefit of renenet and others. They are all Merlin/Arthur. Recs are accompanied by my freakishly sleep-deprived commentary. (Unfortunately, none of the AUs mentioned in the subject line actually exist, at least not that I've found--get on that, people!)
Be Resigned by franticsga. WIP, but with long meaty parts that are well worth the time. (That's what she said.) Here, Merlin and Arthur are on a combat weather team for the US Air Force and are sent to Iraq. Yeah, I know how it sounds, but it's well-written and incredibly detailed, with some really great characterization. I rejoice whenever this fic is updated.
Drastically Redefining Protocol by rageprufrock. WIP, but you are morally obligated to read this fic. It is the crack of my SOUL. Arthur is royalty, Merlin is a medical intern, they fall in love... and then the rest of the world gets involved. Soooo lovely.
Easy There by syllic. WIP, but so awesome you can read it by installments quite happily. Also known as the rowing!AU. I don't have the faintest idea about Oxford and its sports and traditions, but syllic provides a handy glossary and guide, and most of it is easy to pick up from the story itself. OMG. Hearts drawn all around this one.
The Incident with the Thingy or Arthur's Adventures in Spying by sparky77. Short but awesome. I would totally watch this show. Spies! Gadgets!
The Kingdom of the Blaggers by hackthis. So, all I know about Ari Gold from Entourage is Jeremy Piven! and I am not entirely sure if this fic's Merlin and Arthur are the same characters I have come to expect from the show, but that said, it is still a rollicking good time. (I used 'rollicking' in a sentence!) Also, RDJ flirting with Merlin will never not be awesome.
Lord Drake's Bequest by pennyplainknits. Schmoopy Harlequin fun. How can you pass up the ol' best-friends-pretend-to-be-married storyline, I ask you?
MERLIN by moonythestrals, aka the Fratboy!AU. This is required reading for anyone entering into the world of AUs in this fandom. Merlin and Arthur try to write a screenplay for their class. Fun and adorable!
The Pendragon Guide to How Not to Date by definewisdom. Morgana sets Arthur up on a series of blind dates. Merlin is the bartender to whom Arthur spills his woes. Predictable, but sweet and rather endearing along the way.
We're a Storm in Somebody Else's Teacup by paperclipbitch. Another WIP, although now nearing completion. Again, I don't entirely agree with the characterizations here, but the fic is full of lovely twists and turns and I devour each installment eagerly. Crack! Merlin and Morgana meet at a superpowers support group, and things get more complicated from there. (Oh dear!)
