Author's Notes: The lyrics are from Aqualung's Brighter Than Sunshine, obviously. I got a hair up my ass and needed to get this out. O.o Won't be the last time either. You may notice Harry's words in This Place as being 'I never understood before.' No mistake, I just happened to be on some wierd streak.
-I never understood before,
I never knew what love was for,
My heart was broke, my head was sore.
What a feeling...-
-Tied up in ancient history,
I didn't believe in destiny,
I look up you're standing next to me.
What a feeling...-
“What made you change your mind?” Harry gasped up from his place on the ground. All around him strands of grass were bent and singed, moist from the mist hovering over the battle field. His scar bled slightly but his attention was no longer on it, nor Voldemort, nor anything besides the figure standing above him.
A pale hand came through the haze and gripped Harry's with assurance, he pulled up lightly and Harry came to his feet and eye to eye with Draco, who was making no effort to answer the question, but instead stood there with a triumphant and relieved expression.
His hand would not leave Harry's.
“I realized the one place I should be, and I wasn't there.”
His the grasp tightened and he began walking Harry around the bodies that lay around them, coming finally to a motionless corpse with a yew wand clutched defiantly in it's cold hands. Draco bent down and it picked it up, wrenching it out of the death grip and handing it solemnly to Harry. “It was you, Harry.” he said under his breath, blinking sheepishly in as the sun shone into his face.
Harry realized suddenly what had occurred, the recent memories coming back in a haze. “You saved me.” he said quietly but Draco couldn't meet his eyes. Harry snapped the wand into two pieces and tossed them to a bog a few feet away. He returned his hand to Draco's and stood still above Voldemort's body.
“No,” the blonde said in the sweetest voice had ever heard, “You saved me.”
-I never saw it happening,
I'd given up and given in,
I just couldn't take the hurt again.
What a feeling...-
-I didn't have the strength to fight,
Suddenly you seemed so right,
Me and you.
What a feeling...-
All around the battlefield there were stirrings of victory, bodies shifted, and figures rose. Cheers of elation rose up from the ground and Harry was soon flooded with voices, congratulating him, thanking him, praising him.
But Draco's hand was like a snitch in his hand, natural, electric, right.
Harry caught Draco's gaze, gray, steely, and for once in their lives, happy. They mirrored Harry's own excitement, and a subtle, sweet smirk appeared across Draco's lips.
Harry smiled back and made to say something noble about his nemesis' change of heart but Draco interrupted him, his hand squeezing gently as Harry questioned him with a glance.
“To Harry Potter!” he yelled at the top of his lungs, his face flushing as he shouted.
Screams erupted from the surrounding group and Harry was lifted to their shoulders in a stupor. From his place above the crowd he could see Snape approach the crowd and gently grip Draco on the arm. His face was finally relaxed, and any malicious was long gone. He smiled up from his place next to his godson and acknowledged Harry's success with a simple nod of the head.
A golden feeling rose up in Harry's stomach and he felt something he hadn't felt in years. Optimistic.
At the protest of the crowd Harry suddenly clambered down from their shoulders and made his way quickly back to Draco. Not leaving any room for inquiry he grabbed the Slytherin around the neck and yanked him into a abrupt kiss. At first there was a shock at what a spectacle this would make, but Draco's resolve melted along with his lips as Harry cradled his face and savored the feeling of their touch.
-Love will remain a mystery,
But give me your hand and you will see,
Your heart is keeping time with me.-
When at last they drew apart there was riotous clapping ringing through the crowd, gleeful faces responding in union to the blush on both Harry and Draco's faces.
Their hands found their way to each other again and they took a tentative step away from chattering group of people, finding ease in their matching stride. The fog of battle was starting to clear and a warm ray of sunshine beamed down upon them as they walked away together.
