I really hate how people give up things for lent just because everyone else does. My church has never urged me to give up anything, nor have I really been taught that I have to five up something for lent. I really hate how people (specifically at Myers Park when I was there) would give up something for lent for a topic of conversation, or would turn down a soda or piece of chocolate because 'oh i gave it up for lent'. If you are giving up something, know the gravity of actually ridding yourself of this 'sin' for 40 days and 40 nights. Don't just choose to give up something for the sake of giving it up. You are supposed to give up one thing that separates you from God, thus, by giving it up, you are growing closer to God. Know the importance of giving something up if you do it. I hate that it is a social norm to give something up this time of year just because everyone else is doing it. Know why you give things up during lent.
I, however, am not giving anything up. Not because I feel righteous or because I think that my relationship with God is perfect, but because my family has never done it and my church has never stressed it. I'm not giving anything up for a conversation starter only to purge on a huge basket of easter candy when I say that I'm giving up sweets. I'm not giving anything up because I refuse to be 'one of those people'... 'one of those followers in the crowd'. I think its lame social excuse.
If you truly do know the severity of taking something out of your life for 40 days and 40 nights I commend you. I just hate the people that do it because everyone else does.
