Mello was in her room, actually gathering up few of her things since she was thinking about taking a bath. The heist went well, nothing was worth reporting and so she now was going to relax a bit - even if inside she knew it was hard since her thoughts deviated to the fact that Belphegor was leaving and she was going to stay behind.
The door opened up slowly and a pale, messy-hair head leaned into Mello’s room. “Mello,” L’s fathomless, dark eyes searched the room for his student.
The blue eyes turned to the door when she heard her name being called “Hm? Ah, L” obviously Mello smiled, because she loved this man more than she could ever imagine. Like a happy child, she walked to the door and opened it “Come on in”
“Forgive me, but I’m running short on time,” L’s dark eyes were ablaze, their depths burning with anticipation and excitement. “Are you busy, Mello? Would you walk with me for a moment?”
“I’m not” she shook her head, already forgetting about the bath she had planned. The short woman walked out of her room, looking at L, trying to read his mind though when it was L, that was harder than ever. “What is it, L?”
He beckoned for her to walk beside him as he strode down the hall. “Remember how I was studying magnetic fields? It’s strange how they shift, but I didn’t have any idea of why, or the power that was doing so. Your Prince helped me out a lot, with studying them, and what I discovered was incredible. Speaking of him, he would have been a perfect candidate for Wammy’s House, and it’s a bit of a shame he was picked up by the mafia instead. Although, he lacks motivation, much like Matt. Instead of video games, though, he likes traps and knives. He might have turned out like Beyond, and god knows one of him was more than enough... But I digress. The point is, there is a way to return to our world,” the detective placed an emphasis on the last phrase, his excitement plain with the smile on his face.
‘My prince? He isn’t my fucking prince, what the hell?!’ Mello made a face; she hated to hear L praise other people besides her because all her life she waited to hear that same praising that rarely came. No matter what she was doing now, Mello wanted L’s approval that she was indeed on of the best at his eyes; of course Mello herself had a lot to blame for the fact that she deviated from the ‘Justice’ path that the detective always defended.
But her expression changed when she heard those last words, eyes widening a bit, and head turning to look at the taller man “… how?”
“There are so many nuances, it’s hard to explain, but the magnetic fields and other energies interact to create bridges between this world and other... dimensions. However, the bridges aren’t solid. It’s impossible to tell how long they’ll last, and when or where they’ll return when they’re gone,” L explained. “Also, they aren’t usually powerful enough to allow passage through, which is why we aren’t constantly falling into other worlds. In addition to that, the shifting magnetic fields of this world seem to pull things from other worlds to this one more than the vise versa. I’m assuming they only rarely are strong enough to allow passage, and when they are, someone falls from another dimension into this one. Like you and I did.” He opened the door to his room. Inside, most everything had been set to one side of the room, leaving space for an enormous machine. A metal arc was surrounded by various wires and other electronics had been redesigned to fit together. “Using the information from when you, Matt and I came to this world, I calculated that soon, there will be another connection to our dimension right here in three minutes. I redirected the ships position a bit to get it in place, but I’m sure the captain doesn’t mind all that much. It wasn’t too out of our way. I’m going to amplify the energy and use this machine I designed to get back.”
“But L, it’s safe to say that not only other dimensions or parallel worlds exist, but also time discrepancies. How can you know that you’ll end up in the right time? If you don’t, it might not only cause trouble but probably even change my own future” which… could be a good thing. “We also don’t know if we are actually from the same universe; I mean, you are from my past, I know that, but how can I make sure you are exactly that L, and no other from other parallel dimension” the L that would die without a heir and so make everything in Mello’s life at the age of 14 change.
L shrugged. “We can’t be certain,” he answered honestly. “Obviously time warps as well as space. You appeared here before I did, and supposedly in our timeline, I would have vanished first. I did incorporate this into my calculations, and hopefully, if I’m not mistaken, I will not show up too long after I vanished. It’s difficult to know, though. My calculations for time were much more shaky and uncertain.” He smiled, “I’m taking a risk. And I brought you here for two reasons: one, to ask you if you’d like to come with me and two, because I’m almost certain you’ll say no, to ask you to tell everyone where I’ve gone since I don’t have enough time.”
“It’s risky, L, you can’t just-“ Mello stopped talking when she heard L assuming right from the start she wouldn’t go. He knew, obviously, but she didn’t like it that she could be read this easily. “… people come and go all the time here. They just return. Don’t worry about other’s asking for you, I’ll tell them” her blue eyes looked at the floor, avoiding L’s “How did you know I was going to say no?”
“Just a hunch,” he replied slyly. “And thank you, Mello.” He lifted his hand, ruffling Mello’s hair, “You’re a good kid.”
“I’m not a kid” Mello said softly, almost in a murmur “I’m not staying because of Bel, if that’s what you are thinking” because the man probably was.
L shook his head, “There’s more than just that, Mello. I know you two have more than either of you will admit, but you wouldn’t let one romance, no matter how addictive, get in the way of achieving your goals. Fortunately for you, it doesn’t have to.” He frowned slightly, his thoughts clearly shifting from Mello to something else. “In any case,” he stepped towards the metal arc.
Mello’s eyes lifted from the floor to look at the other “L.” she smiled with some sorrow, as she saw him moving away “I’m sorry. I always tried, I really did” she gave a small chuckle “I just can’t. I can’t follow what you wanted me to follow. I can’t follow what you are, because that’s not what I am. I’ve always wanted you to see me and nothing I did worked, even if I was doing what we were told to do; and then, you died and I just got so tired. I couldn’t stand it, I had to leave the Wammy’s.”
“You don’t have to explain,” he smiled kindly, and leaned forward, whispering in Mello’s ear, “to tell you the truth, I never liked school much either.”
Mello seemed surprised as she heard the other and then chuckled “If Mr. Wammy heard you say that…” Mello’s hand reached for L’s face and gently, like when she was a kid, gave a small kiss over the man’s lips. “Mihael Kheel.”
“Watari never has to know,” L looked mischievous. “And who likes homework, honestly?” he asked rhetorically, shrugging and shaking his head with an amused air. His dark eyes widened in surprise as the gentle, chaste kiss was placed on his lips. “I’ll keep the name close to my heart,” the detective smiled and stroked Mello’s cheek, “Please take care of yourself, and Matt.” He dropped his hand away from Mello’s face and walked into the arc. The detective turned a dial, and flicked several switches. “We’ll meet again, Mello.”
Mello stepped back, watching the other. Probably they wouldn’t meet, but it was okay. Because L was doing what he wanted to do, and so was Mello. It’d be okay. Her hand rose, as to say goodbye one last time.
Electricity surged around the arc, flashing like small bolts of lighting, and shorting some of the wires in the machinery. The floor shook, and an enormous flash of light blazed in the room. When the light faded, the arc had crashed down onto the wires and equipment, effectively crushing the contraption L had made. However, there was no sign of L.
The dark-haired detective strode down a hallway, and opened up the door to a blue-tinted room, with a row of computers on one wall.
A boy with neatly kempt brown hair and large brown eyes glanced back at L. “Ryuzaki, where have you been all day?” he smiled and beckoned for L, “Come and look at the new information I’ve gathered on Kira.”
L gazed at the boy silently for several long moments.
He tilted his head, with a puzzled expression, “Are you alright, Ryuzaki?”
L blinked, then nodded, “Yes.” A smile brightened his chronically sleep-deprived face, “I absolutely couldn’t be happier.” He started walking towards the brown-eyed boy, “Please, tell me what you’ve found, Light.”
