So I really love the place I'm living in right now. We have a connecting wall with only one other place and the lady who lives there is older woman who keeps a tidy yard, always rakes our front lawn area for us, has a steady job with normal hours, and is super quiet. We have 4 bedrooms so plenty of space for everyone, the appliances are all in working order and whenever something breaks the maintenance man comes right away. Our backyard is enormous and has a privacy fence all the way around it so we don't have to worry about the dog or Leif escaping. We live on a cul-de-sac and the only traffic that comes in is our other neighbors, none of whom are undergrads or wastoids or stereo blasters.
I never really pictured myself as a cul-de-sac type of person but after living in just about every other type of housing arrangement imaginable in the last 10 years, this is just so nice.
It would be perfect, except for one thing: there is constant pet noise from other parts of the neighborhood. I mean, seriously some days it's like all day long there is some animal outside making a racket. Since I started keeping track earlier tonight there is a dog that has been outside barking nonstop for 2 hours and 45 minutes. The sad thing is that I know it is a different dog than the one that was barking yesterday because it is coming from another direction. The one that was barking yesterday was going for 2+ hours also and Rob actually went and walked around to try and figure out whose house it was coming from to complain. There is just no excuse for leaving your dog outside barking nonstop all evening long like that. It is just so rude, not to mention kind of a cruel way to treat your dog.
(Sidenote: There is no non-emergency phone number for the police station in Chapel Hill. All the calls get routed through the 911 switchboard. So to report a barking dog or say, a stray rooster in your front yard, you have to call 911. Ridiculous.)
Speaking of roosters, there is a stray rooster that roams the neighborhood. It wakes up at about 4 am and starts crowing in our backyard. Seriously, he likes to sit on our fence and do his crowing there. After he finishes with the morning serenade he pecks around in the woods and continues to crow throughout the day. We called animal control about it and they said they'd already received other complaints and offered to set more traps but said that they would probably just catch all the neighborhood squirrels. Personally I can't believe that one of the several neighborhood cats (there is a cat fight outside pretty much every night too, FUN!) hasn't already offed the stupid thing.
I know it is petty to be so annoyed by this type of thing but it just really irks me when people don't take care of their pets. We usually just deal with it by turning up the music when the dogs are barking all through dinner time and beyond but at some point doesn't someone have to do something?
