Barefoot In The Kitchen

~"Homemaking is a creative act, a work of art in progress. We buy our food, clothing, shelter, and health care rather than viewing what sustains our lives as integral creative acts. By being consumers instead of creators, we buy instead of do, accepting the creations of others instead of exploring and expressing our own values and creativity." ~

because i'm a joyful girl
because the world owes me nothing
and we owe each other the world "

As of 1/24/08 I pledge to a *modified version* of The Compact
The Compact has several aims (more or less prioritized below):

1.To go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture and to support local businesses, farms, etc.

2.To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er).

3.To simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)

The basic rules are as follows.

1. Don't buy new products of any kind other than food, medications, or hygiene products (from stores, web sites, etc.) Unless I have exhausted all other avenues first (Craigslist, Freecycle, Thrift Stores, etc..) Only then will I purchase that particular item new.

#2 Borrow, barter, or buy used as much as possible.

We will purge our home of all unused, unwanted, or extraneous clutter. We will purge our lifestyle of all unwanted, unhealthy, and extraneous clutter .

“We’re not out to be environmental martyrs. We’re just a group of folks looking to consciously reduce our consumption and keep trash out of the landfills. "
-Rachel Kesel, Compact member”
