1 tutorial: black&white feat. Emma Cauldfield

Jun 23, 2008 12:54

kettenbrief asked me, about my b/w arts so here you will learn how to get a great black/white picture like the one below.

+ Photoshop 7

(01.) In my opinion, you get the best b/w effect on pictures, that look already great with colors, so I always work on the colors and stuff and then change it to b/w and decide which looks better or fits better for me :)

I will now show you what I usually do with an HQ fotoshooting picture - the ones that already have great colors to work with.
I used this picture of Emma Cauldfield known from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which can be found at sweetandtalented.com , but it should work with any other good picture, too.

(02.) Now we are going to improve the colors;
. Duplicate the base, set it on "overlay", opacity: 75%, fill: 75%. see
. Duplicate the base on top, set it on "multiply", opacity: 25%, fill: 25%. see (not needed if the picture is quite dark)
. Duplicate the base on top, set it on "screen", opacity: 50%, fill: 50%. see
. Duplicate the base on top, fade the desaturation to -100, seit it on "soft light", opacity: 75%, fill: 75%. see

(03.) Now our picture will get black&white;
. Press ctrl + 2 - the image should now be b/w because you are only seeing the green channel.
. Go to select -> select all
. Go to edit -> copy merged
. Press crtl + < - now the image should be colored again (!! important for the next step)
. Go to edit -> paste
. And here you are with your b/w image on a seperate layer

Just to show you;
this is how it would look like if you just fade the desaturation to -100
Not that nice, is it? :)
