Author’s Notes/Disclaimer: Set after Poltergeist III - Carol Anne is approximately 11 years old. I do not own these characters and am making no profit, etc. Warnings for angst. This ficlet, like all that I am writing for this series of prompts, is dedicated to the memory of Heather O’Rourke, the late child actress who played Carol Anne in the Poltergeist films. Rest in peace, sweet angel - you are remembered and loved.

Carol Anne had always been a happy child, and for the most part, she still was. School was all right, she had her friends and a loving family, and that radiant smile of hers was never more than a joke or playful moment away. Her hair glimmered in the sun when she went walking, and she hummed pop songs from the radio and gazed with wonder as the moon rose on bright, clear nights. She was a normal little girl, though smarter and more sensitive than many. Special in her own way, but nobody who saw her in the street or at the mall could ever guess about the gift that she possessed. Small girls do not usually hear the dead speak, or have the power to reach out and draw ghostly beings towards the living world.

There had been no ghosts for some months now. And so Carol Anne kept playing and smiling, and simply growing up.

Yet some nights the tears came unbidden, making her ache like no sadness ever had before. It hurt so much, though she tried to forget all the suffering she had been through, and struggled to blot out the face of Reverend Kane from her memories and dreams. He had taken so much from her, and caused so much distress to her loved ones. Most of all, the loss of Tangina weighed heavy on her young heart. It was as if a hole was torn in her life, a gap both raw and jagged, more painful than a wound upon the skin.

She wept sometimes, in silence, and she mourned. And wondered how long the sorrow would feel so unbearable.
