Character: Sansa Stark
Series/Fandom: A Song of Ice and Fire
Age: 13
Gender: Female

Appearance:

Sansa Stark appears everything one expects a highborn lady from the stories to look like -- she is beautiful, even at her young age. Her frame is small and delicate, though recently she has been growing stronger. Normally, her long hair is a rich auburn, and her large eyes are a deep blue. She likes wearing pretty things. As a highborn lady, she has a whole host of rich garments from which to choose, and she looks amazing in pretty much everything.

Personality:

Courtesy is a lady's armour, Sansa once was told, and she has taken that lesson to heart. Courtesy is her armour and weapon. She seems to be all a highborn lady ought to be -- noble, polite, soft-spoken, and gentle. She can sing, write poetry, play the high harp, and do all what noble ladies are supposed to do. She is likened to a pretty little bird, who sings the pretty little songs that others have taught her. Because she goes through so much abuse, both psychological and physical, courtesy is the only armour she has, the only weapon she knows how to use. Although she doesn't smile much anymore, she still is polite and gentle, and people like her. Social graces are her forte, and she exudes an air of femininity.

She once believed in stories and wanted her life to be a story, but she quickly learned that life was not a song. When her illusions were shattered one by one, she stopped being so trusting, but still, she cannot let go of her empathy for others. A man she knew told her the truth that there were no true knights, even as he became her own almost true knight. Even so, she adapts to change and hurt, and throughout it all, she survives. Because, really, if she doesn’t change, she’ll find herself disliked by someone important who’ll simply order her killed in some way. She is slowly leaving behind her naïve, innocent self, and becoming versed in the ways of intrigue. She doesn't think about her family. It's a self-defense mechanism.

Sansa Stark was once a silly little girl, but the world has no room for silly little girls.

History: [major spoilers for the series]

Sansa Stark grew up the second child of Eddard Stark, the Warden of the North, and his lady wife, Catelyn Stark. She had one older brother, Robb, and three younger siblings, Arya, Bran, and Rickon. She also had a half-brother, Jon Snow -- the Snow signifying that he was a bastard. The Starks lived in the cold, wild North, and their ancestral home was a castle called Winterfell. Their sigil was a grey wolf on a white background. As a child, she loved songs and stories, and she wanted her life to be a song. In her dreams, she would marry her beautiful prince, and they would live happily ever after.

Things didn't happen as she wanted them to. When she was about eleven, her father did betroth her to a prince, and her father became King Robert Baratheon's advisor. When she met Prince Joffrey, her infatuation blinded her eyes to see who he truly was. To her he was noble, and gallant, and brave, and everything a prince ought to be. Therefore, she, her father, and her sister Arya headed south to the capital, King's Landing. She loved the capital. She loved the dances, the other nobles, the jousts -- she loved everything about the city. Her days were spent visiting the queen and the princess, gossiping with her best friend, and simply being a highborn lady. Also in King's Landing, she met Joffrey's Hound, Sandor Clegane, named for the three dogs on his family arms and for his savage nature and his obedience to his masters. The Hound was essentially the prince's bodyguard, and even though he scared her, she remained courteous to him.

However, her father, too honest for his own good, became tangled up in court intrigue, and the Starks' lives were in danger. When he told Sansa and Arya of his plan to secretly send them back home and end Sansa's betrothal, Sansa immediate relayed this information to Queen Cersei, her father's enemy, whom she had trusted. As a result, her father was imprisoned, and she was placed under an equivalent of house arrest. Her younger sister escaped in the fray.

Only when the now King Joffrey beheaded her father did she see him for who he truly was. This was the point where she started realizing that life wasn't a song. Her father was dead, her sister was lost, and she herself was a prisoner at King's Landing. She would have been happy to see her betrothal broken, but the Starks' eight-thousand-year bloodline was nothing to scorn. She remained in the capital, and Joffrey subjected her to verbal and physical abuse, forcing her to see her dead father's head and commanding his knights to beat her. Only two people ever helped her, the Hound and Tyrion Lannister, the queen's brother. Even though she knew the Hound was a brutal man, entirely jaded and cynical, he was her protector, of sorts, and she soon felt . . .safe, with him.

One day, she discovered a note telling her that there was someone who would help her. This person was Ser Dontos Hollard, once a knight, but now only a fool. He was under the employ of Petyr Baelish (aka Littlefinger), who had been in love with Sansa's mother, Catelyn Stark née Tully. Meanwhile, her younger brothers Bran and Rickon were believed dead, and her elder brother Robb was crowned the King in the North. The rest of her family were labeled as traitors to the realm.

Because Joffrey Baratheon was actually born of incest between Queen Cersei Lannister and her twin brother Jaime Lannister (this was rumour, although not established as fact), King Robert's younger brother Stannis Baratheon declared himself king, as did his youngest brother, Renly Baratheon. In the Iron Islands, Balon Greyjoy crowned himself king. This war became known as the War of the Five Kings (Joffrey Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Renly Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark), even though Renly Baratheon died before Greyjoy crowned himself. After defeating Renly's troops, Stannis Baratheon led his men against King's Landing.

During this battle, Sansa and the other women were hiding in Maegor's Holdfast, the "inner" portion of the Red Keep, the castle at King's Landing. It seemed that the battle would end with Stannis's victory, and Queen Cersei had ordered that all the women be put to death should that be so, so that he would never capture them alive. However, at the eleventh hour, a turnabout began to appear. Tyrion Lannister brought wildfire into the battle, a substance that would burn even on water, proving extremely damaging to Stannis's ships. Also, the Tyrells, another noble family, brought unexpected reinforcements. With this, Joffrey's men were able to turn the tide around and defeat Stannis.

During the battle, Sansa had been in her room, when the Hound grabbed her. Even though he had fought bravely, he was fleeing the battle, for they had brought in wildfire, and fire was his worst fear. He was deserting, and he offered to take her with him. When she refused, he demanded from her the song that she had promised him once, and with that, he left, leaving her only his bloody cloak as a memento.

Because the Tyrells had brought in severely needed food for the starving populace of King's Landing, the pretty daughter of the family, Margaery Tyrell, grew immensely popular with the commoners. Sansa's betrothal to Joffrey was then broken, and he was betrothed to Margaery instead. The Tyrells offered to marry Sansa to the heir of the family, Willas Tyrell. However, Queen Cersei discovered this plan, and she married a thirteen-year-old Sansa to Tyrion Lannister instead, so that the Lannister family would have her claim to Winterfell. She hated all Lannisters by that point, and their marriage was never consummated. In the meantime, her brother, her mother, and her brother's men were killed in a bloody slaughter at what was supposedly a joyful wedding,

With the help of Ser Dontos (and arguably the Tyrells), Sansa managed to escape King's Landing the day of Joffrey's wedding, and ultimately, the day of his poisoning. She and her husband Tyrion became the major suspects, although she did not learn this until later. She discovers that Ser Dontos was not truly her knight -- he only helped her because Petyr Baelish was paying him. The Hound had once told her that there were no true knights, and she grew all the more closer to believing him. Ser Dontos was killed by Baelish soon after, but Sansa had left King's Landing.

Pulled in: Taken from the middle of the third book, when she is escaping King's Landing

Cut down: Nothing to cut down, really.
