Fic; My Family Now [Simon/Kaylee, G]
Title: My Family Now

A/N: It's sort of AU, because I realized after I wrote it that River's first job was in Serenity and I didn't want Simon and Kaylee to be a couple yet in this fic. So uh... yeah. My bad. Written for 15minuteficlets
Prompt: Reunion
"Can't sleep?"
Kaylee shakes her head and gives the protein drink in front of her a stir.
"Yeah, me neither." That much is obvious but Simon feels the need to say it anyway. He hates this part of his job. The part where he's forced to wait with Serenity because he's the doc and if anything happens to him, then he can't help them anymore. And if he can't help them anymore, River's on her own.
Kaylee gives him a half mannered smile in response, her attention obviously on how the other crew members are fairing. They're all used to dangerous jobs by now, but it never stops her from worrying. They're all like her family now, and Kaywinnit Lee Frye loves her family.
Simon considers going back to his bunk. He can pace there and not interrupt Kaylee's thoughts with his worrying about River. He supposes that he'll always hate her going on jobs with Mal, Zoe, and Jayne and that no matter how many times he protests it to Mal, she's going to keep going with them. After a pause though, he decides to sit down at the table in the dining area with Kaylee. They can worry together at least, he tells himself.
"They're goin' to be fine," Kaylee sounds like she's trying to reassure herself of that fact rather than him.
Simon manages the same half smile she gave him earlier. "Right, of course."
"I mean... Captain's a great leader, and he know when there's trouble," Kaylee continues. They both know she's thinking aloud now, convincing herself of the well-being of the crew, but Simon isn't going to stop her and she can't stop herself. "He'll get River and 'em back safely."
Simon has several retorts about how River's safety wouldn't be an issue if Mal had listened to him and not taken her along. He keeps them to himself, sensing this isn't the time to be down talking Mal. "Of course," he repeats, unable to think of anything better.
"We'll have lots of money after this job," Kaylee adds, her habitually bubbly nature showing through despite the dark circumstances. "Captain was sayin' that we might stop for a couple days on Paquin. That's where I grew up. It ain't nothing special but it was home, you know."
Simon nods. He understands how excited she is about going home without her having to say it. Though, her statement of how it 'was home' catches his curiosity. "And where's home now?" he asks.
Kaylee hesitates, something he doesn't see from her but once in a great while. "Here," she says, stirring her drink again. "On Serenity... with Mal, Zoe and Wash, Jayne, Sheppard Book... " she bites her lip, pausing yet again. "And with you and River," she says. "Y'all are my family now."
Simon doesn't know what to say in response to that, so he reaches across the table and takes her hand in his and that's enough.
