I am so cold. Germany is so cold! I spent the first month of the summer in New Mexico with my roomate Shoshana volunteering on an organic/biodynamic farm where it was nice and hot. It was amazing! The Southwest atmosphere is heavenly and the weather is almost perfect. Our farm was nestled right between petroglyph covered red rock mesas and the lush rio grande river, right beside a pack of silly lookin llamas and eight feet tall ostrich/monsters. Shosh and I spent our weeks waking up with the sun (when everything is most beautiful, that light is something else) then we dug, weeded, planted, picked, hauled rocks, and painted all day. Dude, there is nothing more purifying and than spending all day covered in dirt and touching green things.
Although the work was difficult at times, it was Eden- no noise, no tv, no makeup and clear skies. The farm was organic so no pesticides or chemicals and barely any machinery was used to run the farm- the difference in taste of this produce was incredible. It was also biodynamic so there was a spiritual aspect to this farm. For example, they picked and planted the crops according to phases of the moon. Also, a teepee was built in the middle of the field where a person would burn a certain type of dung and chant every sunup and sundown to ensure the health of the farm. Then, magic charms such as upside down pyramids where buried in the ground all around the farm to entice the earth's natural energy in the soil.
I don't know if I totally believe in that method of farming but it seems to work just fine for these people and other biodynamic farmers compared to other types of farms. I think its awesome because they are farming in the thousand year old tradition of our ancestors- they are totally working with Mother Nature. The spirituality there was beautiful and refreshing.
I stayed in a dome/tent thing in the fields with a bunch of insects because the tent wasn't connected to the ground. As long as the things weren't in my sleeping bag, I dug it, creepy things are my forte. And I got to watch a wide spread of stars and listen to an orchestra of crickets as I drifted off to sleep every night.
After New Mexico I travelled around Arizona for a week where the hostel we stayed at owned this hot ass pink nineteen sixty-something cadallac, then stayed a few weeks with my grandparents and dad in NC. I finally made it to a Busch race, aaaah there is nothing like the hum of race car engine to make my blood run hot. Mmmmhmm those sleek auto-bodies and sneaky racing maneuvers are absolutely... well, hot. Auto racing runs in my family, my ancestors were famous for building damn swell race car engines. My grandma has a life size cardboard cutout of Dale Earnhardt in the guest room (my room) right beside the bed, its the freakiest thing to wake up to in the middle of the night. Now if only racing wasn't so detrimental to the enviroment... but hey, I can't help but love it.
