Christmas had kinda always been a big thing in my family, everyone would come over and swap gifts, as kids we would all go off and play whilst the adults sat around and had a chat and a couple of drinks, then as the night got on, we’d all come inside and sit around and sing, play games, have lots of fun really. It was a big thing, and it wasn’t just family, it was friends too. Those were the good times, the fun times, times before college and Pylea.
But those were not the best Christmas’, sure my folks were there and a lot of my friends, but the ones that were the best, those were the ones that came after Pylea, the ones spent in that large dusty old hotel, The Hyperion.
There was this one Christmas there, actually it was my first, and everyone had done this whole secret Santa deal where you brought a present for only one person and you couldn’t tell them, or anyone else, who you were buying for, so it was a surprise. I got Angel, and what do you buy a Vampire who has everything? I had no clue, and being broke didn’t help much either. I hunted high and low for something for him and I ended up coming across this shop that sold children’s dressing up clothes.
You should have seen Angle’s face when he opened up this gift to find a Childs plastic vampire cape inside it with some of those glow in the dark fangs, no one could stop laughing, and I finally felt like I belonged there, in my new family. It took him a while to find the book mark I had gotten for him, probably because Gun was running around with the cape on, acting like a kid.
Everyone else opened their gifts, I ran my fingers over mine slowly, worried it might break, until it was my turn to open it. There inside was a crystal on some string.
‘It’s to hang in the window, so when the sun shines through you can see a rainbow.’
‘Thanks Charles.’ I said softly, hugging him. A small gift, but so much thought put into it.
I excused myself from the others, going up to my room to hand the crystal up, but when I got there, on my bed was more gifts. I looked behind me and there was no one there.
The first was from Cordy, gift vouchers to a clothing store, the second from Charles, a meal out a Taco Belle for all of them. The last one was from Ange,l a blank journal with a note saying Time to start writing your own story, rather than living through others.
‘It appears I was a little late in sneaking this into your room, so.’
She looked up to find Wesley standing there, ‘But I didn’t get any of you…’
‘It doesn’t matter Fred, we wanted to this special for you, here.’ He handed her a heavy gift.
‘A book?’ She smiled a little, ‘I wouldn’t expect any less from you.’
‘Just be careful.’
The wrapping was carefully pulled from the book, I was so worried I might do it some damage. Finally pulling the paper off I saw the book, Grimm’s Fairytales.
‘It’s a first edition, I saw it in this book shop and decided it needed to go to a good home, to someone who would look after it and enjoy it.’
‘Wesley.’ The book went down on the bed and I hugged him tightly. He felt stiff in my arms but he soon seemed to relax and he wrapped his arms around me.
‘Merry Christmas Wesley.’
‘Merry Christmas Fred.’
