Chapter One - The New Professor.

Sirius Black never wanted to fall in love.

Love had taken one of his dearest friends away from him. James Potter had fallen in love and changed in a matter of seconds. One moment Sirius and the Marauders had been playing Exploding Snap rather comfortably in the Common Room. Then that damned Lily Evans walked in and the James Potter that the Marauders once knew and loved had been stolen away forever!

Sirius glared over at Evans as she ate her chocolate cake. The start of term Feast had been as fantastic as always and Evans had eaten almost everything that had been placed before her. Sirius wondered if James knew about her grotesque eating habits and her massive appetite. It seemed as though he did, but Sirius could not understand why his best friend was still looking at Lily like she was a princess. She had chocolate on her top lip, for Merlin's sake!

James brushed Sirius off when he pointed this out. "So?"

"What's so special about her?"

"Lily? She's smart and beautiful and sexy and-"

"She hates you," Peter Pettigrew pointed out, bolting down his apple pie.

James glared at him and he wilted. He kept his hazel eyes fixed firmly upon the back of Peter's burning neck and said slowly, "You'll know what I mean when you fall in love, Padfoot."

"Not going to happen, mate. Sirius Black is never going to fall in love."

"You will when you meet the right girl."

"Right WHAT?"

"Right bloke," James said hastily.

Sirius scoffed before turning his attention to Remus Lupin, who was sat besides him, eating a bowl of treacle tart. "What do you think about love, Rem?"

Remus' face darkened. "It's dreadful. Causes nothing but heartache. Did you know that love is one of the main causes of suicide?"

Sirius patted him on the back. "That's my boy!"

Remus laughed, but he blushed red. He honestly thought that being in love was far from dreadful, although it was the cause of the dull pain in his chest that plagued him night and day. Remus happened to be in love with Sirius Black, the boy that thought love was the work of hell itself.

Sirius grinned to himself and glanced around the Great Hall. At the Slytherin table, Severus Snape was gawping at that Malfoy bloke. Sirius thought they'd make a fantastic couple, because they were both stuck-up and thought blood was more important than anything else in life.

A girl on the Hufflepuff table with freckles and dark hair was looking Peter up and down, licking her lips. Sirius smirked; maybe Peter, the most timid of the Marauders, would finally get a himself a girlfriend.

The Great Hall suddenly fell silent as Albus Dumbledore stood up, ready to make his usual speech.

"Welcome," He beamed. "To another year at Hogwarts! I have a few notices to give out before we all retire to our nice and warm beds. Our caretaker, Argus Filch, has asked me to read out this list of items now banned in the school corridors. Dungbombs, Stink Pellets..."

James, Sirius, Peter and Remus all exchanged grins. They had most of the banned items waiting in their Dormitory, safely hidden in their trunks.

"...so do not use any of those items or risk detention" Dumbledore smiled, his eyes twinkling in the candlelight. "Now, allow me to introduce our new Defense against the Dark Arts teachers: Professor Maurice Flint!"

A dark-haired man sitting besides Dumbledore smiled nervously as the students applauded him lukewarmly. He had deep brown eyes that were framed by neat square glasses and his teeth were white and very straight. Sirius stared up at him, gob smacked, and he clapped more enthusiastically than everyone else.

"Sirius?"

"What?"

James caught hold of his fellow Animagus's hands and said with a grin, "You can stop clapping now."

Sirius looked around and saw everyone had fallen quiet again. Quite a few people were glancing in his direction. He hastily put his hands by his side as Dumbledore dismissed everyone to bed. James leapt up and, his eyes fixed on Lily's retreating back, hissed to the Marauders, "C'mon, let's follow her!"

Peter rolled his eyes and hurried after James. "Bloody hell, Prongs! We have to follow her anyway, stop running!"

Sirius stayed in his seat, gawping up at the staff table. He jumped about a mile into the air when Remus tapped him on the shoulder.

"Come on, Pads."

"What?"

"Bed."

"Oh, right. Coming Moons."

Sirius rose out of his seat. Then, suddenly, Professor Flint glanced over at the Gryffindor table and smiled at him. Sirius promptly turned every shade of red imaginable and turned around so quickly that he knocked his chair over with a violent clatter that echoed through the hall.

Remus blushed as all eyes seemed to fall upon him and Sirius. Even though they were almost ten feet apart, Remus could hear James and Peter's hysterical laughter, which was became almost uncontrollable as Sirius made to run from the hall and scattered a crowd of first-year Ravenclaws and Professor Flitwick.

James was wiping tears from his face when Remus approached him.

"It looks like Sirius Black actually DOES fall in love..."
