Liberal Stereotypes
I wrote this in my LiveJounal a couple days ago, but cut some of it out because it was a little long.. I think it pretty well addresses liberal stereotypes.
I recently read an article on Ann Coulter's website in which the interviewer defines liberals as white immoral "intellectual elitists" from New England who attended ivy league schools, are from affluent families, and are therefore completely out of touch with reality. Of course, Ann Coulter agrees with him. Ironic, isn't it? Ann Coulter went to Cornell University, is from Connecticut, is white, and comes from an affluent family.
I, on the other hand, the very type of person that they try to target with these liberal stereotypes, have spent most of my life in Battle Creek, MI. I attended a public high school, and I'm attending a public university, both in the midwest. I am definitely not from an affluent family. Nobody in my family has ever been to law school, nor are they doctors, or CEO's, or world-famous actors.
Though I'm sure she won't read it, here is my message to Ann Coulter: By the time I was ten years old, I had seen more reality than you or any of your snobby political friends will ever see. I know what it's like, to be down-and-out, to live below the poverty line. I know how it feels to grow up in a single-parent home, to watch your mother laid off, your family's hopes ruined as Corporate America downsizes to make their stock go up a half a point (and the man who did the downsizing is now Secretary of Commerce, hmm). So please, Ann Coulter, explain to me what "the real world" is like, because apparently I have no clue.
And how dare any so-called "conservative" question my morals or my ethics! How dare they preach abstinence-only education, when 90% of them do not practice abstinence. I have led a more conservative life than most conservatives. I'm not a weed-smoking hippy or a wild drunken party-child. However, I lead my conservative lifestyle based on personal choice, what I believe is right FOR ME, which may not be right for the whole country. If you claim to uphold conservative values, then fine. Uphold them. But don't expect the rest of the world to share your values.
So conservative Republicans want to create an "everyman" image for themselves. Funny, when I look at conservative political figures, a few things come to mind every time: CEO's, good-old-boys, rich spoiled brats who are looking for yet another tax break whose burden will be picked up by the lower and working class citizens and their children. Fat white men who are intimidated by change because change leads to equality, and so long as there's equality, there won't be any more spoiled brats who can cheat the country into getting yet another million dollars in their bank accounts.
We liberals weren't born on pedestals with our lives handed to us on silver platters. We don't sit around all day and whine about everything. We get up every day, work for what we have, and hope that one day, the snobs on Capitol Hill will understand what we go through just to survive.
That is a true liberal. We're not intellectual elitists. We're not eccentric artists who are totally out of touch with reality. We're not weed-smoking hippies with no moral integrity. OK, so maybe some of us are, but not most of us. We're working-and-middle-class citizens who understand the grave injustices happening in the class divisions of society today because we've lived through them. We value hard work because we've had to work for everything we have. We value diversity because we are diverse(unlike 96% of all conservative Republicans, strange how Ann Coulter failed to mention that when accusing liberals of racism). We value freedom of religion. We don't believe in forcing our religion on those who choose not to practice it. We're not out to make Christianity, or any other religion, illegal, but rather, we welcome all religions to the public square with open arms. If accepting the differences of others is forsaking Christianity, then I guess I'm going to hell. The truth is, conservative America is outlawing all religions excepting Christianity. They seem to think that either every other religion goes or Christianity goes.
Liberals are painted as unpatriotic because they dare to question the government. Tell me, in a country where countless soldiers have given the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, our ability to question the government, what single act could be more patriotic?
So, my fellow liberals, fly an American flag, put a Support Our Troops magnet on your car (even if you don't support their leader), stand tall, speak loudly, and let your voice be heard. You are the biggest patriot of them all, never forget that. Be proud of your beliefs and your convictions, and NEVER give them up for anything. Let the sparks fly for the next four years. Give those hypocrites hell for even daring to think to challenge your morals, your integrity, and your lifestyle (you know, the kind where you actually have to work). Put your heart and your passion in everything that you do and say, and let the world know: I AM PROUD TO BE LIBERAL.
