Summary: The moment Itachi decides to follow his last ANBU orders.
Dream, Brother
They had just given him the mission to kill all of his clan for peace to come to the village; for peace to prevail all, they had said.
He walked down the market thinking of buying tomatoes for Sasuke and maybe other things to make a nice meal with his mother. He tried to forget it would be the last one. Itachi didn’t want to go through with it though; he didn’t want to kill his family. If peace meant killing other people, then how could it be peace at all? People would still suffer at the end. People would hurt. He would hurt.
He passed by the academy, where from a distance he could see Sasuke smiling triumphantly out of the doors. He had done something right, it seemed. Hn. He knew his little brother was a show off. (Would it be the last time he would smile like that?).
He remembered all the times he had taught Sasuke new techniques. The smile that came to Sasuke always made him happy.
Turning towards the tree, he noticed a pink haired girl being bullied by three other girls around her same age. What surprised him the most was not the actions the girls were taking on the poor child, nor the color of her hair or eyes (he had never seen green eyes like hers, he noted), but the fierce determination of his little brother walking towards the group.
“Leave her alone!”
“Sasuke-kun!” Yelled in surprise one of the bullies. “We are only playing with forehead-girl over here.”
“It didn’t seem like playing,” without preamble he helped the girl up and he must have asked her something for which she nodded in return. But Itachi knew neither had said a word, and it all had gone through looking at each other’s eyes. Interesting. “Now go away and don’t bother her again!”
Itachi saw how the girls ran away from Sasuke’s cries of fury; Uchihas had that effect.
Sasuke turned back to the girl with the pink hair and smiled at her. “Don’t worry Sakura-chan, I’ll always protect you, just like my brother protects me.”
The girl with the big forehead smiled brightly at Sasuke and timidly said, “Thank you, Sasuke-kun. Your brother must be proud.”
“I don’t know, but he is always teaching me new techniques. Maybe one day when we get married, I’ll teach them to you.”
“Married?”
“Hai. That way, I’ll always be with you to protect you. That’s what my oto-san does.”
“Ah. Hai, one day we’ll get married Sasuke-kun.”
Itachi smiled, never had he seen Sasuke speak that way, but a kid with all his passion and determination only spoke true words. He noticed how the two spoke animatedly and started walking away from the academy. Nothing could have stopped their smiles. It was at that moment that he decided that no matter how many more lives it would take, bringing peace to Konoha (peace to Sasuke and the little girl) he had to sacrifice his family’s lives.
The night of the massacre he couldn’t forget the face (and the eyes) of the pink haired girl. As he spared Sasuke’s life, he wished and hoped that his brother wouldn’t listen to his words of hate and find peace in the little pink haired girl.
Years later, as he falls in battle (Sasuke finally succeeding) he hopes there is a pink haired girl back in Konoha to receive Sasuke and maybe, just maybe, have that happy ending.
