Here is his story....
Non compos mentis
“The Gardener”
Grady Eugene Barnes has been at Mrs. Blathersby’s orphanage as long as anyone can remember. Grady was never adopted and stayed on as the orphanage’s gardener after he became an adult. The sisters would often say he was “Non compos mentis” (not of sound mind) Grady thinks they talked that way in front of him so as he wouldn’t know what they were saying….but Grady knew.
Grady has never been one to talk much but he does like to hum a good tune….the gardens around the orphanage has been his life…watching the flowers grow and the children too.
It’s rumored that he fell in love once with one of the young Nuns that worked at the orphanage. Sister Mary Rose and Grady were often seen walking in the gardens together…late in the evening after the children were long in bed Sister Mary Rose would slip out to the gardens and meet Grady.
The guilt being too much for the young sister she left the orphanage with only a note behind for poor Grady. He buried the note and some say his heart in the garden behind the roses.
