Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth

akadougal asked me to write about David Bowie, I’m not sure she knows what she’s done but here goes. Honestly I could have written a lot more.

Anyone who follows my twitter or tumblr knows I’m a huge Bowie fan. When I was little I was allowed to rent a video on a Saturday night so my first exposure to Bowie was in Labyrinth which is still one of my favourite films.

I remember in 1997 when the Earthling album was released, there was a big fuss about the sound being drum and bass. I really liked it and bought the album on cassette. I think that was the first time I really took notice of his music. The same year Radio One had a special programme to celebrate Bowie’s 50th birthday. He performed acoustic versions of a few songs and I heard Quicksand for the first time, he also played Lady Stardust. I hadn't heard anything like it before and I fell in love.

Luckily I recorded the show on tape and those songs were my soundtrack for my late teens. If absolutely pushed I think Quicksand is still my favourite Bowie song.

I was also a fan of Placebo at the time so when Bowie performed with Placebo I was hugely excited. Somewhere I still have the CD single of Without You I’m Nothing.

I then went to college and bought The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Then I might have bought a whole bunch of his other albums.

Last year I took myself off too London to see the Bowie exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum and it was just fantastic. I think it took me about 3 hours to go round it. There were lots of amazing costumes, audio and video. I love all the Alexander McQueen frock-coats, so so fabulous. Of course the 60s and 70s costumes were amazing and outrageous too. Particularly liked the blue suit from the Life of Mars video.

At the end of the exhibition there was a big screen playing different concerts through the years. If there was ever a chance to go and see Bowie in concert I would grab it with both hands. I’m talking selling my kidneys and all my worldly possessions here.

Of course last year had the added excitement of a new album which he launched unexpectedly and it’s brilliant. I can only hope and have everything crossed that this means Bowie’s not done and there’s a lot more to come.
