But I think you're totally right - it was a brilliant piece of sci-fi and a superb piece of drama. The best of fantasy and sci-fi always has tackled big issues, often by the back door, and this was no exception.
If this was its swan song, it was an epic one. I was so angry with the PM and the cabinet on Thursday that Ianto's death didn't really register. I am so glad that the otherwise annoying Ms Spears came through in the end.
Moral of the story: don't trust the Civil Service.
I loved this series, though it broke my fucking heart repeatedly. If this is the end, and I kinda hope it is because you can't beat an exit like that, then I can be content with that. And overall I can live with Ianto's exit too, he really did herald the end of Torchwood, even RTD says that if Ianto had been alive then maybe Stephen would have lived. When Ianto died it was the beginning of the end for Jack, at least for this particular lifetime on earth with this incarnation of Torchwood. And considering how his character started, it's incredible how important he was to it all by the end.
Yep, RTD's comments are on the Declassified on the DVD. I can't quote exactly but he said that Ianto did mark the beginning of the final spiral downwards for Jack, his death left Jack heartbroken and damaged, which played its part in Jack's final decision regarding Stephen. Which was how I read it when it aired, but it was great to hear it validated by the writer of the show himself :)
I think I could cope with the odd special, Jack on a different world/time. And I think I would like a mention somewhere that he does at least pay Gwen a visit to properly say goodbye because I felt for her so much. And if he does ever meet up with the Doc again then there's always these parallel worlds if they do want us to have another quick glimpse of Ianto in happier times. In DW anything is possible, in TW though I think Ianto is gone.

I really hope the Beeb take heart from the large viewing figures and are willing to make more quality drama.

Ianto's death didn't really hit me until I re-watched the end of day 4. Then I cried buckets.

Did RTD say that on the DVD extras? I haven't seen them yet as the DVD is waiting for me at home and I'm stuck in London for the next week.
A brand new start maybe in a different era would be better. In a perfect world I would want Ianto back but I can't see that happening.
