This challenge on 30 minute ficlets Name: Festering Hatred.
Rating: PG-13
Words: 698
Time: 36 minutes.
Characters: Sirius, Lily and James, with brief mentions of Remus, Peter and Regulus.
Pairings: Sirius/Lily, James/Lily and a hint of Sirius/James.
Notes: Firstly, Sirius, Lily and James are all some of my favorite characters. So, although in this fic they are portrayed as horrible, horrible people (maybe not Lily) that's just how the fic turns out and I actually really like them. *Cowers* Please don't hurt me.
Sirius had never meant for it to happen. When the Potters had taken him in, he was more than grateful, he was eternally in their debt. He did everything he could to work it off, from doing their gardening for them to cooking meals whenever he had the chance (which wasn’t often, since the only thing Sirius could cook was pasta, and even then he had to use a wand to stop it from becoming too dry). But he hadn’t expected that one day James would bring home his girlfriend, the girlfriend Sirius had never know about, the girl that Sirius thought hated James with a vengeance.
Lily Evans.
He was more than surprised when James strolled through the door, arm wrapped possessively round Lily’s waist. Sirius wasn’t really sure whether to be frenziedly angry, unbelievably indignant or ecstatically happy. That night, after Lily had gone home (looking significantly scruffy after having a ‘talk’ with James in his bedroom) Sirius confronted James, he had so many questions, why hadn’t he been told? What colour underwear did she wear? James refused to answer them all and an argument broke out, both of them walked away with their pride and friendship battered.
Sirius quickly stopped helping around the house, restricting his waking hours to watching Lily and James from corners, scowling at them whenever they passed, spitting all sorts of names about them under his breath. His sleep patterns became more and more erratic, his behaviour ever more aggressive as the days went on. Fights broke out between him and James, both with wands and fists, and what had merely been resentment festered and grew into hatred.
Remus and Peter were little consolation, they tried to calm Sirius, even set up meetings between him and James. Every time Sirius talked to them, they ended up being subjected to verbal -or physical- abuse. Sirius even turned to Regulus, sending him an owl asking his opinions on the matter, his response was lacking in advice, but piled with guilt-trips and a zealous bitterness that reminded Sirius just how much he hated his brother.
Then, one day, Sirius saw Lily, all alone and without James, looking exceptionally upset. He instinctively went over to her, his caring nature overcoming his zealous disgust at her and James.
“What’s wrong? Why aren’t you with James?” He had asked, he could not think of anything better to say. Lily had immediately shot him a look of pure contempt.
“Do you think I need James with me every waking minute?” She snapped. Sirius made hurried explanations and apologies before asking again, albeit in a more tactful manner.
“Me and him just aren’t working,” She had told him “He’s been acting strangely this last week, aggressive.” Sirius winced when he heard that, he knew what had made James act that way. He continued to talk to her, to console her, and it wasn’t long until she was crying, talking about all the good times she and James had had together as she clung to Sirius.
The next morning, Sirius had woken up next to her, at her house, in her bed. He only vaguely remembered taking her home, going up to her room, how he had taken advantage of her and how they had slept together. Perhaps under the influence of alcohol (Sirius’s pounding head and the faint taste of vodka on his tongue suggested so) perhaps not. But the first thing he noticed was the bed, warm and fluffy, with a bright red duvet. The second thing he noticed was Lily, curled up silently next to him, snoring quietly.
The third thing he noticed was far more disturbing.
James stood in the doorway, tears in his eyes, his fists clenched. Sirius opened his mouth to say something, anything to explain but no sound came out. After moments that seemed like hours of staring at each other with tears rolling down their cheeks, James finally said something.
“You.” It wasn’t a shriek, or a growl, it was quiet and almost inaudible. Sirius did not respond as James turned away and stalked out through the door. He couldn’t say anything, for the first time in his life, he was speechless.
