She's much more self-righteous in the book

Gaskell is overly fond of killing off characters.

I’ve not read anything by her (yet) but if N&S is an indication then, girl, you ain’t kidding. After the first one I thought “OK, I can see that, very sad, got it.” The second I was like “Really? Well, all right.” By the end I was all “OH COME ON, another?”

they abandoned it entirely in the second season though. They don't even talk to each other, which is super frustrating.

Really? That would be annoying, especially given that they had this whole flirty “we’re like brother and sister but not really wink wink” thing going on in S1. The writing seemed to be leaning toward that way, which I recall because I wasn’t fond of it at all. :)

But they let Bradley James go shirtless most the time so I'm not wholly complaining.

Yes, that can only improve the viewing experience, unless of course the shirtless boy is blindingly pale and pastey and skinny and should never never be shown shirtless when a ‘female swooning’ effect is desired. (as is a certain recent crap-yet-blockbuster-film-that-I completely-and-utterly-deny-having-seen-I-was-totally-blackmailed-into-it-it-was-just-for-the-LOL-I-swear…)

I find Gaskell to be a refreshing balance between the former and Austen. She's aware of her social issues, but doesn't let that get in the way of good story-telling.

From my very scant knowledge of Gaskell, my shamefully limited knowledge Dickens, and my somewhat fuller knowledge of Austen, that statement makes a lot of sense. ;)

Nicholas, was that the quite guy from the beginning that shows up again at the end? Cause, if so, I believe it: it felt like he had far more story than what we were given in the mini.

They start selling Arthur/Gwen in a hardcore way in season 2

I’d be OK with that too (I mean, going back to the basics of the myth isn’t a BAD idea) but, from what I recall, there is not a lot Arthur/Gwen chemistry/scenes in season one; I hope it wasn’t too abruptly started. Cause, fail, he was making mad eyes at Morgana for most of S1.

I somehow still find myself watching a new episode each week.

Oh, I’ve been there. I think the Office is getting there for me…there seem to be more mediocre episodes than not in the last couple seasons. (Which makes me sad, cause S2 was amazing.)

LOL. Hey now, I consider it pure research in the psychology of humans and crap phenomena. And it is nice to be able to have a fully informed, if smug and self-righteous, stance against them. You have no idea how often I‘ve gotten the “But if you only read them you’d understand…” line, which I get to happily smack down with “I did. All four. Still hate them. Take that.”

…not sure what this says about me, but hell, I am not going to lie, I love to hate that franchise. ;)
